I recently had the opportunity of interning at DK publishing in London through a study abroad program. During my internship, I was worked in the marketing department and really loved it. I will be graduating this May, and am considering applying for the NYU and Columbia summer publishing institutes.

I would like to continue doing marketing for a book publisher or possibly exploring advertising sales for a magazine.

Has anyone attended these programs? I am wondering if the information is more editorial based and will not be relevant to what my future career goals are.

I also wanted to know how difficult these programs are to get into and if anyone has advice about the application process.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I did the NYU Summer Publishing Institute two summers ago, and it definetely hit on the marketing aspect of book publishing. As far how easy it is to get into, I don't know. The application process was the same as if you were applying to grad school -- letters of recommendation, personal essays, GPA, etc. I know the NYU accepts about 100 students in each year.

As far as advice on the application process, I didn't think it was that hard, there was one long essay, which was about why you wanted to be in a specific field, I think. There were also shorter questions, which required responses that were probably a couple of paragraphs. I spent a month completing my application, but I was also working full-time in newspapers, so I had a lot on my plate.

All in all, the program solidified that I wanted to be in publishing, and the contacts that you meet are excellent. Like I tell everyone A JOB IS NOT GUARANTEED through the program, but you will make great contacts.
