So heres the deal, I have been interning with a pr firm since october, unpaid (I have 3 internships under my belt in pr by now) In December they offered me a position to start in january part time and full time in feb.. well some clients dropped off and they took back the offer for the time being.. Well it is now mid feb and they are in talks of offering me a part time position with no benefits hourly salary. (still no formal job offer yet) The problem is.. they are hiring a new EVP and an AE this month also. (which means they have the budget to hire) I feel that I have proven myself to this firm and they have said I am an asset but I feel that it is unfair to give me 3 days a week (leaving me to work another job just to make ends meet) they mentioned that maybe in 6-8 MONTHS they could give me full time w benefits. My prob is that I have been on numerous interviews and haven't been able to secure a full time entry level position. I need the experience from this job but I feel that I am being cheated of a fair salary and only being able to work part time. Am I crazy for thinking this? Does anyone out there have any other advice/options for me??

Unless you have a job to go to, you'll be worse off if you leave. If I had nothing else I would just take the part-time job, which is a step up from interning for no pay, and continue to look. Then when you get another offer, see what this place offers you.

You have a much better chance of landing that other job if you keep this one. Write up a great job description on your resume. There's no need to mention on your resume that you're part-time with no benefits. There might not be a reason to ever mention that. A resume is a marketing tool, not a confessional and there's no need to provide unrequested information.

I would just keep at it, but keep looking for something else. Just continue to do a good job and try to learn what you can. Who knows? Maybe your next job won't even be entry level.

In a nutshell, do it until you have either a full-time position there or elsewhere. Even part-time, it's still better than full-time at starbucks.

I agree with the others
Take the part time job until something better comes along. And when it does come along, don't let the company guilt you into staying on forever and a month until they have a replacement. They've spent the last several months doing what's best for them, you do the same.

Good Luck

I feel your pain!
The intern that I supervise is going through a similar quandry, and while I've lobbied for her to a full time job offer, I haven't been able to get buy-in from upper management, because it's cheaper for them to get her on indefinitely so they don't have to pay full time benefits. It's really unfortunate that it's come to this with smart, hard-working college grads getting treated this way. And I suspect it's happening to other people, too.

On the up side, if you're only working a few days a week, that should give you enough time to job hunt and interview on the side. Those of us who work 40+ hours a week know the difficulty of trying to sneak out for interviews or phone chats with prospective employers, so hopefully you can turn your situation into a positive by wowing them when you're in the office and going on interviews when you're not. Good luck!

I agree with the others. Keep this and keep looking. Remember, this company doesn't owe you anything. It's pretty much the norm with PR/Advertising agencies that hiring is depending on keeping or getting new accounts, and when an account is lost, jobs often are as well, as it's the accounts that pay your salaries.
