Are there any magazines or book publishers that allow their freelancers to work from home instead of coming into the office everyday?

For fact-checking, work-at-home is the only kind I'm aware of.

i've done it on books from home... hmm, media bistro has a "fact-checking essentials" class coming up soon, I bet you'd get a good answer re magazines there!

I do this kind of work regularly.

However, I worked for two years as an in house freelance fact checker for two major magazines.

When I left NYC to move to another city, I continued working with one magazine from home and my name has gotten around, so I sometimes get calls from other magazines to do freelance fact checking from home.

I think you'd need to build up your reputation by working on site at the NY mags that hire freelance fact checkers, then segue into working from home.

I have no idea how book publishers operate.

Good luck.

A magazine I used to work for full-time (major national women's pub not based in NYC) relies heavily on freelance fact-checking help and frequently uses people from out of state. (Their research chief even lives in another state!) Feel free to e-mail me if you want contact info.

I look through the mastheads of magazines and contact the research editors or managing editors. How do you find your out of office gigs?
