Hey there,

I'm working on a story for a nat'l magazine about how it's a really normal occurrence with young women in high-profile careers in NYC to skip breakfast and lunch so they can have a fab meal at Stanton Social and drink more without worrying about calories. The article isn't going to identify this as an eating disorder or link it to an alcohol problem, but just explore how, when you work in an industry where you're expected to look a certain way and when you have a lot of social engagements, it's easy to begin proportioning cals in an unhealthy way.

Does this describe your experience? I'm looking for quotes--attached to first name, occupation, age, as well as a woman to profile who's experienced this (or has experienced this in the past, and gotten over it) the article isn't sensational or judgmental, but is really going to explore how this is a really, really common phenomenon that can lead to way unhealthy consequences. If you have any thoughts or questions, please e-mail me at adnyceditor@gmail.com

please investigate "the scoop"
the weirdest thing I've seen - and I think this is exclusive to NY women - is to go to a breakfast/bagel place, and order a bagel "scooped, toasted" etc.

what this means is the bakery person, with a gloved hand, digs out the soft middle of the bagel, leaving only the crust that is further crisped out by toasting. Then the customer asks that a big whallop of say, tofu cream cheese or something on the scooped out bagel. Apparently this is imagined to reduce the carbohydrates or something. It's so unappealing, so unhealthy. I mean, why not just order toast? Why shave calories on the bread to go overboard on the filling?

I have no idea where this common breakfast tradition started, but it may be connected with the trail you're following. Keep me posted, please.

I think most of the New York women eat breakfast on the go, say as the previous poster noted a bagel with cream cheese or something with their coffee on the go, however, lunch is then skipped for dinner. I think this is a normal happening with women in more parts of the country then just New York....

NYC man here and I always order a scooped out bagel on the rare occasion I eat breakfast out. First of all bagels are huge in NYC so it's way too much bread and yes way too many carbs. Also if you add some cream cheese, it sits nicely in the bagel and doesn't squirt all over your hand especially if the bagel is hot.

the scoop on scoop
yeah, printingman.... i once read somewhere that an nyc bagel is the equivalent of a loaf of bread... maybe it was half a loaf, but still.... doing "the scoop" allows you to have all that bagely flavor (and cream cheese!), without eating a week's worth of bread. mystery explained?

I work with a girl who hates bread. She will eat it as part of a hot sandwich, but not as a stand-alone or part of a normal temperature sandwich. She also hates hot beverages, but enjoys soup. Is this strange?

I see a lot of skinny young gals parade through my local Tastee Delite for those free sample tastings. The tiny cup holds maybe a tablespoon of this low fat "fake ice cream" (as I call it). I suspect they never buy a small cup of the stuff because that would be too indulgent. Yeah, I know some of the flavors are not so low cal, but we're not talking about real ice cream, folks. There's also those tempting toppings to avoid!

Tastee Delite is so grosss!

Personally I tend to skip out on breakfast and usually launch because I'm so involved in my work - so, especially in NY, I tend to only have an early dinner as my snack of the day. And since I've spent no money on breakfast or launch, I feel like I can afford to splurge more on dinner. My one meal.

Of course I realize this is unhealthy!

I did have an addiction to dried fruit that was sold at Fairway for quite a few dollars. But since I don't live nearby anymore, I sadly can't locate those special fruits.

2nd scoop on scooping
According to my Weight Watchers friend, a bagel is the equivalent to 3 pcs of bread. Asking for the deli guy to scoop out your bagel seems really high-maintenance to me. How about just eat 1/2 the bagel? Or order something else.

Pinkberry
Pinkberry is awesome and so healthy! They only have 3 flavors, coffee, green tea and plain. If you order a medium, it includes 3 toppings. The toppings are the healthiest you have ever seen, fresh fruit, cereal, etc. It is frozen yogurt that actually tastes like yogurt, not like tasty delite (tastes like air). Its not a weird eating habit, but definitely a good thing to have for lunch/brunch if you are going out to a fabulous dinner.

Stupid girls ...
I read in the Times recently that according to the MTA police, 90% of all the "sick passengers" on the subways that cause delays are these idiot girls who skip breakfast (and who often have skimped on dinner the night before) and literally pass out from malnutrition ... all because they're trying to be all "Sex and the City"-ish in their perfect size zeros.

I remember a paramedic interviewed for the article said one woman who passed out said in the past 18 hours, all she'd eaten was half an orange and one-FOURTH a piece of dry toast.

Yeah. You're carried out of the number-2 train on a stretcher, but at least you LOOK fabulous.

Nice to see Matt back with his hatred of women.
Are all gays as transparent as you?

Overweight, underweight....Americans have a screwed up relationship with food from sea to shining sea. And then they die and in the end what does it matter?
