| Linda F | Posted 2/10/2008 3:18:09 PM | show profile It's finally done...the site for my new organization, Creative People for Animal Welfare (creativePAW). The organization's mission is to help animal welfare organizations find creative professionals (such as writers, editors, illustrators, and web designers) who are willing to do volunteer work to help with their marketing, education, fundraising, and PR efforts. You don't have to worry about spam if you join the database, as animal welfare orgs have to join and be approved before they can search the database. Please check out the site and join the database...it's free (obviously) and simple, and you can choose to take on only the volunteer work you have time for. According to the Human Society of the United States, a homeless companion animal is euthanized every eight seconds in the U.S. creativePAW?s mission is to help animal welfare organizations publicize their causes and educate the public about homeless pet issues. So please, sign up and get involved! (Also, let me know if you detect any glitches...the site is brand new.) Thanks so much! | writesonwater | Posted 2/11/2008 4:10:58 AM | show profile | email poster Great idea, Linda. That Kill Day video is soooo sad. The dog we adopted from the pound 5 years ago is the single best thing that has ever happened to our family (other than our family). He is our brother and son. He also looks eerily like the dog on the front of the Kill Day video. I signed up for your site and will tell other writers. | writesonwater | Posted 2/11/2008 4:23:48 AM | show profile | email poster Linda, I took the liberty of doing a blog about your organization on my blog about writing and editing: http://writingporch.blogspot.com/ ------ http://writingporch.blogspot.com/ http://jlouiselarson.blogspot.com/ http://familyrootsandwings.blogspot.com/ |
| wineaux | Posted 2/11/2008 10:55:37 AM | show profile Linda, what a fantastic idea! I promise to join as soon as I finish this post. My beloved Akita/German Shepherd mutt came from the pound in L.A. He had been there for awhile and he was set to be euthanized two days after we adopted him. He was big and a bit unruly, but when I saw that his time was up soon, and read the notes from the staff about him being a gentle giant and very bright, I just couldn't leave him there. He has been loyal, gentle and a great protector of our whole family. He's spoiled rotten now, however, and I think he's forgotten his time in the slammer. Yesterday, he stole a cupcake off of the counter while I was outside, and when I walked into the livingroom, he was stretched out on the couch, with white frosting and rainbow sprinkles smeared all over his snout. He get me this look like, "What? Nothing going on here." I think I like my dog more than most people. Even when he's being a rhapscallion. |
| sue ellen mischke | Posted 2/11/2008 10:59:52 AM | show profile i signed up. Good idea. |
| wineaux | Posted 2/11/2008 11:05:53 AM | show profile I signed up! You've done a great job. It's really cool website. I couldn't watch that video. :( |
| Linda F | Posted 2/11/2008 12:00:34 PM | show profile Thank you, everyone! I love hearing stories about rescued pets. I should add that we need not just writers but also other professionals -- like PR people. A clinic organizer at the feral cat spay-neuter clinic, in fact, told me that many orgs need help with PR. So please do sign up if you're a PR professional! Linda |
| Janetblueyes | Posted 2/11/2008 1:11:25 PM | show profile I'm absolutely in. Great job Linda! |
| wineaux | Posted 2/11/2008 1:16:33 PM | show profile Oh God, I just watched the whole video and I am a completely soggy mess. Those tiny kittens!!!! I didn't know they euthanized kittens, unless they had a grave health condition. I think the posters from Idaho are very profound. (For every dog/cat that dies in a shelter, there is a person responble). I wish the whole world felt that way. |
| Linda F | Posted 2/11/2008 2:23:53 PM | show profile Thanks for joining, JanetBlueEyes! Waineaux, now you know why I couldn't even get through the video. I didn't get to the kitten part. I am horrified! |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 2/11/2008 2:33:10 PM | show profile What an amazing idea! I will go sign up too! We just rescued a cat from the streets (others here might recall the post about treating ringworm. He's doing great, by the way! Still on quarantine in the bathroom but .... ) Our other two cats came from foster homes - and they were my first children. :) Nothing soothes my soul more than my cat in my lap, purring. I am going to pass this along to a few PR friends as well. You're doing a wonderful, wonderful thing! |
| Nikongirl | Posted 2/11/2008 2:50:26 PM | show profile Hi LInda, What an wonderful idea! I just went to the site and was about to sign up when I realized I'm in Toronto Canada and wanted to ask if your site is just for US citizens. Let me know. I have rescued many animals over my lifetime and know there is such a need forhelp. I absolutely LOVE the making beds for pets idea. I have a great friend in NH who sews...and is also an amazing animal person. I will contact her aswell. She is not in the media in any way, but I am pretty sure she would help with something. NG |
| Linda F | Posted 2/11/2008 4:10:55 PM | show profile Thanks! Nikongirl, creativePAW is worldwide...you can use the pulldown menu to choose your countey. Linda |
| Nikongirl | Posted 2/11/2008 4:13:52 PM | show profile Great, Thanks Linda... I already called my friend in NH and am sending her the link. NG |
| wineaux | Posted 2/11/2008 4:16:20 PM | show profile I added some of my non-writing background in my profile, since it may be of use to the non-profits. Maybe not, but better to list it and be of help than to not list it when there may be a need. I think what you are doing is so amazing and really a brilliant concept. Thank you for having such a good heart and a smart head. |
| Mag Girl | Posted 2/11/2008 4:25:52 PM | show profile I signed up too! All of my animals are adopted...I don't think I will ever have a non-rescue pet. Thanks for supporting animal causes with this new project! |
| catlondon | Posted 2/11/2008 5:36:48 PM | show profile Fabulous idea, Linda! Do we have permission to circulate it to other listservs for creative people? |
| Linda F | Posted 2/11/2008 6:28:43 PM | show profile Catlondon, you not only have permission...I would *love* for you to get the word out to other creative professionals. Thanks! 48 volunteer members already! Linda |
| jazspin | Posted 2/11/2008 8:29:44 PM | show profile | email poster I signed up too - this is fantastic idea. I've had so many shelter pets (and helped family members foster other pets) that I would love to do something to give back. |
| Katie | Posted 2/12/2008 12:11:57 PM | show profile | email poster Linda, Thank you for doing this. I'm PR and just signed up. |
| mad fingers | Posted 2/12/2008 1:27:41 PM | show profile Woof! Signed up yesterday and passed the info along to a bunch of friends in the biz. Could a gal with three dogs and six cats (all rescues) do otherwise? |
