I don't know if anyone will remember, but awhile back I had posted about going somewhere warm. We've decided on Puerto Rico, which one of you recommended and I thank you all for your suggestions.

For those of you familiar w/ PR, what would you suggest to do, or can you recommend a really cool/unique restaurant or activity?

We are pretty open-minded and adventerous.

We're staying at the Tres Sirenas hotel in Rincon, from a recommendation from a friend. It's supposed to be a very laid back surfing area (the husband is an avid old maner).

Wineaux - You'll love P.R.! I would suggest staying away from Old San Juan unless there's something you specifically want to see there. It's very "touristy" and you'll be competing for things to do with not only others vacationing there but all the cruise ships that dock there as well. There's a lot of shopping there but the stores/prices are the same as US so you're really not missing much. Just my opinion on that..

Here's a few favorites of mine:
If you go to Ponce, check out Mark's at the Melia. The food is worth the trip!

If you're into horseback riding, Corozal is the place to look. Beautiful beach and the tours are never over packed like others.

If you're into nature, El Yunque may be of interest. Beautiful waterfalls and scenery.

Have you ever considered zip lining? I've been wanting to do it for a few years but no one will ever do it with me (too scared I guess). If you and your husband want to try something different that may be an idea. I've been told there's a few places in P.R. that offer it (if you want to look into it).

Hope you enjoy your vacation!!

Oh, I would totally do the zip lining thing! And he'd be into it too. I was thinking about it the other day and wondering if they do that there.

Thanks so much for the advice Jr. I really appreciate it!

If you are in rincon, you are pretty much not going to be hitting ponce, san juan etc...they are all on the other coast. What you WILL be close to are world class surf breaks that rival hawaii on their best days. Look up a surfing school and spend some time in the water or go on a fishing trip for the day. Rincon is way more laid back then the east coast of pr, not much to do, but in a good way!

That's why we picked it, it's off-the beaten path nature! The husband loves to surf and we now live on the Long Island sound, so this will be a treat for him. We just want to lounge, hike, maybe take a boat ride, snorkel maybe. Soak in the nature. I'm def. thinking of that zip lining idea.
I'd love to go horseback riding, too. I was thinking of getting surfing lessons, since I don't really know how. I'd love to learn, if the waves aren't too huge.

you'll be loving it then! surfing won't be a problem..even if there are big waves, there are always locations where its not so big and ideal for learning. I'm not sure if its available there or not, but when I was in the rain forest (name escapes now) we rented mountain bikes and did a tour - wasn't anything to technical and even if you are not experienced you can do it. You'll have an amazing time! If you want local recommendations check out the travel board on newyorksurf.com - lots of trip reports there

I haven't been there recently, but I remember, the nighttime boat ride on the phosphorescent bay near La Parguera as being amazing. the water glows because of all the luminescent dinoflagellates in the water. Nearby Borqueron Beach is beautiful. San German, also nearby, is an old colonial town close to coffee plantations. San Juan sucks, people unfriendly there. El Yunke worth the trip.

Yes, I like to surf as well. www.newyorksurf.com is good. Also the shipworm and gribble blog spot is good for local NYC surf and trip ideas.

yes indeed. great shop. super high end boutique shapers. Love the concept, can afford a board there!

Yes the boards are expensive but are 100X better than those stamped out Chinese made boards, Got a new 9'2 log ordered there for the spring.

I would def. like a boat trip as you described, foto.

That board shop looks so cool. I'd love to get the husband a new board. We're making the trip to PR for our 10th anniversary, and that might just be the perfect gift. How cool would it be to have the board in the hotel room when we arrive! I wonder if I can pull that one off.

I made reservations through the hotel for surfing lessons, and he's going scuba diving too. (I'm not certified yet). I'm still looking for a zip line place, but I think I'll call the couple who own the hotel and ask them if they know of a place. They are really nice people and have been so helpful. I can't wait to get down there.

Wineaux, I would have to say that a board from Mollusk Surf Shop would be a great anniversary present, I will remind my wife on our 5th which is coming up.

I wonder if that shop is affiliated w/ the Mollusk surf shop in SF? That's another really great board shop.

So cool that they do surfing movies on water drums behind the shop.
astrahook Posted – 2/19/2008 1:43:02 PM | show profile
it is in fact the same owners as the sf store...

That makes perfect sense. That's a really, really nice surf shop.
