1. Do you have any usual bits of trivia you care to share?
urine can be used as an antiseptic. If your friend is injured, you can urinate on their wound if you have nothing else. It is perfectly sterile. This however is not true of number 2. Urine only

2. What answers are you perpetually seeking?
why am I always unhappy

3. What did you receive and/or give for Valentine's Day?
just the usual

4. Do you know anyone running from the law?
I'm running from the law (of gravity). But gravity always wins.

5. What was the worst hotel/motel you have stayed in?
Super 8 Motel Interstate 80, somewhere in western PA.

6. What was the most wonderful hotel/motel you have stayed in?
Fiesta Americana, Cozumel.

7. What items have you stolen from your workplace?
nothing

8. Have you ever started a rumor about someone?
no but plenty have been started about me.

9. Are there any superstitions you act on?
not really, but I wish I could believe in groundhogs day.

10. How do you typically handle telemarketers?
I ask them about their underwear. I assume its not harrassment if they're calling me.

~Bonus Question~
Time for a random confession. What would you like to admit/fess us/declare/get off your chest?
I've always wanted to design a multimedia experience bathroom that gave you a printout afterward of the size and weight of your deposit and charts longterm trends in your bathroom habits. They should be installed in workplaces and the printouts posted outside the john so coworkers can compare.

JBE - I'm currently planning a weekend trip to Mystic. I'm about an hour and a half away but was looking to stay up there anyways. I'm now writing down your hotel on the "No" list!!

The Cliff Notes version: My then-gf and I wound up at an old hotel on a Greek isle that had a smell like rotting meat permeating it, a smell that got exponentially worse over the course of the day and night. We met a tiny female owner out of Central Casting who warned us 3 times on checking in to lock our door and shutters before we went to bed. This in the country with the lowest crime rate in Europe. Most places we stayed in Greece we didn't even lock the doors, let alone window shutters.

Anyway, that night in our room (we hadn't seen a soul there since we checked in that morning) we couldn't sleep because the stench, which started at bad, then appalling, had graduated to unbearable (we're talking rotting corpses) and the room was stifling because we had locked our shutters and door per instruction.

The next morning, we woke to discover that the furniture in our room had been re-arranged while we slept, including the antique 4-post oak bed we were in, which had to weigh a couple hundred pounds. When I tried with all my might to push the bed back against the wall (I'm 6'4" 230 pounds), it barely budged, and when it did, it made a squeal on the marble floor that would wake the dead. (Who, apparently, were already up.) That sound was not something we would have slept through.

It took about 2 minutes to throw on our clothes, pack our suitcases, and bolt out of there like bats outta hell, seeing no one as we left.

And yes, when we got back to the US, I checked the national geologic websites for any signs of earth tremors in Greece for that time period. Not only no tremors at that time in Greece, there were none recorded anywhere in Europe.

Janet, I've been to that Ho Jo, and I can attest to it's nastiness. My dad is from that area, and I flew in to see my family and a friend who came with me booked a room there. I walked through the door and it was dank, musty, and stank of stale cigarettes and there was hair on the batroom floor and the toilet, too.
I refused to stay and got into a big fight with my friend. She is a total cheapo and it's as low cost as you can get around there. I wound up finding a really cute, beachside place for $20 more a night by dropping my dad's family ties to the owner. Shameless, I know, but better than staying at that stinkafied flea bag you had to endure.

By the way, I think you should go for it with the boss. You deserve to throw caution to the wind and focus on some mindless passion. I can attest that the Irish boys know what their doing in that arena.

jr-another one to steer clear of in Mystic is the Inn at Mystic. I was perepetually warned that the service was bad and the people were rude, that it was dated and the food was bad.

I was told the Steamboat Inn is cool, and the Whaler's in is where I stayed and I thought it was pretty cool. The location is great, right in town.

I was also told the Inn at Lower Farm is nice, as is the Whithall Mansion, which is really old. I think from the 1770's.

Are Keltoi and Keltoi2 the same person? Why the numerical distinction?

And Janet, wasn't that too much information about your boss? I just came from reading the "Boss Confidential" thread....

keltoi2 Posted – 2/14/2008 4:16:56 PM | show profile
PC, congratulations! If you're going to Greece for your honeymoon, definitely consider Hotel Katikies in Oia on the island of Santorini. The hotel's rooms cling to the cliff face over a gorgeous caldera (a massive volcanic explosion blew away most of the island c1600 BC; some believe the island is the source of the Atlantic legend). Most of the photos of stunning whitewashed churches and homes against deep blue seas are of that island.

Also check out Mykonos--a party island, lots of fun--be sure to try the caramel gelati. If flying into Athens, check out the old town and the Acropolis, and the National Museum if you have time, but not much else to see.

As for the haunted island, I'd rather not say on-board for the same reason I omitted a lot of details in my description--I may want to use it some day. I trust my fellow BB posters implicity, of course ;-), it's the silent readers I'm wary of. But if you activate your email I'll let you know.

Homer, keltoi and keltoi2 are one and the same. I added the 2 when I couldn't remember my sign in stuff for keltoi after wiping my computer once.

Pamelabeth, Charlie Manson was buddies with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and reputedly was involved in writing one of the songs on Pet Sounds. No Monkees connection as far as I know. Though Michael "Quiet Monkee" Nesmith's mom invented Liquid Paper. Mike inherited about $40 million from Mom.

I mean, "Atlantis" legend, of course.

Hey keltoi- Can you send me the name of the hotel too? I want to check it out next time I'm over in Greece and Turkey.

Pholiday, once my son called me on a business trip -- he was staying at the Sandestin Hilton, on an upper floor (8th maybe??) and he was blown away by the room and the view. Apparently this room was to die for -- as a 25-year-old from OUR family, he'd certainly not stayed in it on any family vacations.

Writes, I'm giving my random compliment of the day- you don't look old enough to have a 25-year-old!

wineaux - I'll be sure to look into those. Thanks for the info!

1. Canadians, who are generally dismissed as boring and irrelevant to the larger world, invented insulin and the Blackberry, without which some people can't survive a day.
2. Why do so many lovely people suffer and nasty %$$#@'s seem to get away with so much unpunished? Where do our souls go after we die? If it's heaven, will any of those nasty people end up in same patch of clouds?
3. Card and a kiss.
4. He's strolling, cool as a cucumber, because he's very, very good at ensuring his victims have little to no credibility and authorities shrug off his very real crimes.
5. Three way tie for worst: a sailors' hotel in Copenhagen, a dive in Granada and getting flea-bitten in the youth hostel in Baltimore.
6. The Gritti Palace in Venice, the Xara Palace in Mdina, Malta. Le Germain in Montreal is also lovely.
7. None.
8. No, but several have been circulated about me, including one that went all the way to India where a friend squashed it flat.
9. Not really.
10. Thank 'em and hang up.

BQ:
After 8 weeks of PT, co-pays and hard work, I may still need surgery on my shoulder. ugh.

jr, if you have any other questions, pm me. I have loads of famiy in that area and am pretty familiar with it. I spent many a summer there as a kid.

mag girl, you are MOST kind. I'm a bit baby-faced, but nurturing along the wrinkles.

My son's now 26.5, an engaged career man finishing his masters at Johns Hopkins now! I had him at 20, just four years out of high school. (A babe in the woods with a baby!)

Oh, Caitlin, FLEA-BITTEN in a Baltimore hostel! Ew!

I've heard great things about Montreal and about Quebec City too. I'd love to go some day.

1. Do you have any usual bits of trivia you care to share? Owls don't shit. They don't have assholes. They puke up pellets.

2. What answers are you perpetually seeking? "Why" pretty much everything.

3. What did you receive and/or give for Valentine's Day? Got a bottle of saké. Gave a Guinness sign (not neon).

4. Do you know anyone running from the law? Probably.

5. What was the worst hotel/motel you have stayed in? Motel 8. Gastonia, NC

6. What was the most wonderful hotel/motel you have stayed in? It was a castle in Ireland. Can't remember the name. Helluva wedding.

7. What items have you stolen from your workplace? Stolen? Used to get a lot of swag...

8. Have you ever started a rumor about someone? No. Bad karma.

9. Are there any superstitions you act on? Knock wood. Try not to break mirrors....

10. How do you typically handle telemarketers? My spouse is great on this one, because the house is in my name. They ask for me and he says, "No, she's not here. I haven't seen her in three days. She took the kids." Then he starts crying... priceless.

~Bonus Question~
Time for a random confession. What would you like to admit/fess us/declare/get off your chest?
My spouse thinks I'm cheating on him, or at least, he keeps joking about it. T'ain't funny.

1. Do you have any usual bits of trivia you care to share?
no
2. What answers are you perpetually seeking?
Why can't I better control my negative reactions to situations that push my buttons? Why aren't there more desirable, boy-toy men in my town?
3. What did you receive and/or give for Valentine's Day?
some great bread, cheesecake, and chocolate from various coworkers that we all shared.
4. Do you know anyone running from the law?
not technically running from the law, but two kids who broke into my childhood home when I was 14 never got caught, even though circumstantial evidence pointed to them. They stole replaceable stereo equipment from my brothers and dad, and irreplaceable heirloom jewelry from me.
5. What was the worst hotel/motel you have stayed in?
a Motel 6 with some friends in Ft. Lauderdale at age 20. very late night, very hungover morning.
6. What was the most wonderful hotel/motel you have stayed in?
the downtown Standard in L.A. (drinking a beer and watching the sun set over downtown L.A. when my frends back east were freezing their asses off was cool); as a kid, a cheesily furnished condo in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., that had a great wraparound terrace and open living room with sunrise ocean views.
7. What items have you stolen from your workplace?
stapler, paper clips, manila folders, roller-ball pens
8. Have you ever started a rumor about someone?
not that I'm aware of
9. Are there any superstitions you act on?
spilling salt and throwing it over my shoulder, more for the fun of having a kitchen ritual than a superstition.
10. How do you typically handle telemarketers?
apologize for not being interested in whatever they're selling, hang up.
Bonus question: What would you like to admit/fess us/declare/get off your chest?
ANNOYED over the last few weeks that my roommate's boyfriend has visited from out of town: I can hear them having sex, and I'm getting fed up with having to blast music to drown them out. Besides, gross visual. Also, our apartment is small, so I wish he'd visit less frequently. I am completely stressed out about looking at real estate for sale: the paperwork, the bank approval, the homes in undesirable/inconvenient parts of town. I am cranky and fear that my moodiness is likely alienating those around me, but I feel like I'm drowning in an ocean of unfulfilled responsibilities. And why the #$@! didn't ------ respond or apologize already? It's been 3 months; what a coward.

1. Do you have any usual bits of trivia you care to share?
It takes exactly six half-turns to remove the wire cage (over the cork) from a bottle of sparkling wine or Champagne. Make a bet about it--you'll win.

2. What answers are you perpetually seeking?
How to earn a living and still pursue my passions. The two seem to be mutually exclusive.

3. What did you receive and/or give for Valentine's Day?
Just cards. My husband is in Asia on business, so I am all alone. We don't normally exchange Valentine's gifts, though. We like to go out to a nice dinner.

4. Do you know anyone running from the law?
No. I run with a pretty strait-laced crowd.

5. What was the worst hotel/motel you have stayed in?
It was some little chain hotel in France--I can't even remember the name, but it was super-noisy and the room was tiny and there were no towels. Like, none. Luckily, I've never stayed anywhere with vermin or filth or demons!

6. What was the most wonderful hotel/motel you have stayed in?
The Elounda Bay hotel on Crete. It was fabulously luxurious. I also enjoyed the cave hotel on Oia in Santorini--there are several, and I'm not sure if mine was the same one that Keltoi visited, but it was so picturesque, and they use a donkey to carry your luggage down the steps.

7. What items have you stolen from your workplace?
Pens and Post-Its.

8. Have you ever started a rumor about someone?
Only about myself, when I tried to let it be known that I was descended from Greek royalty (see previous RTGs).

9. Are there any superstitions you act on?
I throw salt over my shoulder when I spill it, I knock on wood, and I crush up eggshells after I use them so that witches can't use them as boats and sail the seas to drown sailors.

10. How do you typically handle telemarketers?
I cut them off as quickly as possible and say, "I'm sorry, I'm not interested." Then I immediately hang up.

~Bonus Question~
Time for a random confession. What would you like to admit/fess us/declare/get off your chest?
I am afraid I am falling into a deep depression again. I clench my jaw at night and have nightmares about my work. I cry easily and I don't want to do anything but sleep and eat (hence the unfortunate weight gain). On the bright side, I recognize this about myself because it's happened before, and I am seeking help.

hey, astera. your "perpetual question" is one i ask a lot too. i trust that we will work it out someday.

sorry about your job messing with your health. you've said before that the job has really been upsetting you. are there not any better options around for you to explore? doesn't have to be the "dream job"--just something else, something less miserable.

thank you for your good advice to me, btw. be well. pb
