Topic: Shifting from Print to Web

That's going well-enough and I've left an impression on several people along the way, but I've had trouble breakin into the niche I've had my eyes set on. Various things play into that (low turnover in that niche, shrinking budgets, shrinking staffs, etc...). So... I've been thinking about the Web more and more. There seem to be a lot more job listings for Web editors than for magazine editors and it seems smat, for the long-term stability of my career, to follow the industry growth. So here's the question: What are the major difference between magazine and Web editing? I get that it's more interactive and that the gold is to get people to come to your site frequently and stay for a while, but how do you go about achieving that? What skills would I need to highlight in an interview to demonstrate that my magazine experience has prepared me for a Web job? And what are recruiters looking for beyond knowledge of basic HTML tags and prior jobs as a Web editor? To clarify, I'm looking at jobs that are more on the editing side as opposed to the site design and technical end of it. The companies I'm looking at seem to have separate staff that handle those aspects. Thanks in advance! |
