| Ace5203 | Posted 2/15/2008 2:48:51 PM | show profile | email poster So I am still having trouble finding a job and am currently working for pennies at a part-time retail job in an attempt to keep myself afloat. I have sent resumes in to staffing firms and temp agencies with no feedback here in southwest florida. I'd really like to go back north (Columbus O., Chicago, Boston or just a larger city or near one where I could live decently). My mother keeps telling me to look at Headhunters/Recruiters. Can ANYONE tell me which are good ones to turn to for entry-level positions with no experience? I mean to me entry-level means no experience but I find all these entry-level jobs that call for 1-3 years experience. I put myself through school as a cafeteria lady and have major student loans so I cannot do an internship. There just aren't enough hours in the day for me to have the two jobs I would have to have to support myself plus an internship. I know I have no experience in an office but I learn fast and though I didn't go to an Ivy League school I was always made to believe that a big ten school was a degree to be proud of. I just need a little direction. Noone in my family or extended network of family friends went to college or ever attempted a media type job. I would love to be in book publishing but I can put my dreams aside to pay my bills. I am just looking to be someones assistant even. A full-time job with health benefits. Something that everyone around me makes look very simple to get Even if it is not in this field. Just someone to give me a chance. I am a quick learner and know computer programs. So is there such a recruiter? For entry-level liberal arts majors who want to leave Florida if it is the last thing they do? And one last question. Are career counselors worth it and if so, how do I find a good one of those. Thanks for any help that I might get. |
| foodlit | Posted 2/15/2008 3:52:20 PM | show profile | email poster Placement or employment agencies (same thing as headhunters, but not called that at the entry-level), will be able to place you in entry-level administrative jobs if you have good computer skills and some relevant experience. Did you ever work in an office, even a work-study job or summer job? Highlight those skills on your resume. If you really have no experience even in an office that is still okay, you can get a temp office job if you have computer skills....and even if those skills aren't great, most good agencies offer free computer tutorials that you can sign up for and get your skills to where they should be. Now, the tough part....no agency is going to take you seriously for an entry-level position if you are out of state. It's a waste of everyone's time because there are plenty of local people who can interview and start asap. So, you really should move to where you are going, and hit the job search hard, and temp while you are looking. If that is not financially possible...another alternative is to use a local address if you have a friend in Boston for example...so the resume has a Boston address and that shows you are local or will be. I have a handout that might be helpful on resumes/interviewing. If you shoot me an e-mail I'll get it off to you. I used to place tons of entry-level people like yourself, now my focus is mostly 100k jobs and up, executive level, but I still meet with graduating students every now and then to give back a little, and that's where the handout is from....its information that works...some you know already, but if you get a tip or two from it, then it's worthwhile. | foodlit | Posted 2/15/2008 3:54:50 PM | show profile | email poster As an fyi, if Boston is an area you are serious about, then send your resume to Jennifer Keane, one of the owners of Boston Networking Group in Boston. Jen is one of my best friends and we worked together at a big Boston agency for ten years before we left to open our own. Jen focuses on administrative jobs and has a temp group. Tell her I suggested you get in touch. Her email is jennifer@bostonnetworkinggroup.com |
