| Unemployed-gal | Posted 2/18/2008 2:22:36 PM | show profile I fugure I need to change things up a bit in terms of hair styles (I have this long, dull-brown hair). It's been forever since I last got a haircut, so I don't exactly know of any good, inexpensive places in NYC to go. Any suggestions? |
| caitlinkelly | Posted 2/18/2008 3:37:28 PM | show profile How cheap is "inexpensive"? Some people might think $60 (which I pay and really like my guy) too much... |
| Village Gal | Posted 2/18/2008 4:32:09 PM | show profile I think you get what you pay for. How much can you afford? I have great haircut now- get lots of compliments- but it cost $100. also, whereever you decide to go, bring a picture |
| Unemployed-gal | Posted 2/18/2008 5:42:40 PM | show profile Tops, $100 is what I can afford. Though, of course, I want a good haircut, so I'm willing to go a little over if necessary. |
| Village Gal | Posted 2/18/2008 7:09:20 PM | show profile try Suite 303. it's in the Chelsea Hotel 212-633-1011. I go to Heather. It's $100 plus tip |
| pamelabeth | Posted 2/19/2008 1:20:21 AM | show profile a good option is to be a bumble and bumble hair model. it's free! drawback is, you have to go on their schedule, not yours (often in the middle of a work day). but! i have gotten quite a few great haircuts there! free! your hair is being cut by students--but the cut is overseen by bumble and bumble instructors/hairstylists, so it's not like newbies are hacking away unsupervised. and once, in the summer, i showed up with totally frizzy/wiry summer hair. the instructor apparently didn't want to demoralize a student by saddling them with my hair, so he cut it himself. how embarrassing for me, hair-wise--but the cut was terrific. |
| puddypop | Posted 2/19/2008 5:45:52 AM | show profile SEI TOMOKO when i lived in NY (2006 - 2007), i went to a great japanese salon right by union square called Sei Tomoko. Very friendly and VERY reasonably priced, they give you a shoulder and head massage and offer complimentary green tea! all this for about $40 plus tip...(oh, and they gave great haircuts!) check them out: seitomoko.com |
| JCB | Posted 2/19/2008 6:27:35 AM | show profile A great stylist at Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea is John Kovacs. Charges around $100 but so worth it. I've been to dozens (seriously) of "top" stylists but no one's as good as him. (A Vogue editor recommended him to me and I couldn't be happier!) Student cuts can be good, depending on what you want. All great salons have them. Call Frederick Fekkai or Vidal Sassoon. I've gotten some decent student cuts, but of course no one compares to John. Depends on how complicated a cut you want, and how choosy you are. Good luck! |
| keltoi2 | Posted 2/19/2008 11:29:45 AM | show profile Not sure if it's still there (been a long time), but Astor Haircutters (on Astor Place) is cheap and did a decent job. But you have to know what you want before going in, or next thing you know, they'll have shaved the Manhattan skyline onto the back of your head. |
