Hi,

Does anyone belong to or have prior experience with the International Association of Business Communicators? They seem like a useful org., but their dues are quite high, so I wanted to get some feedback on usefulness in terms of education, networking, and of course, freelance jobs.

Thank you!

You don't really have to join IABC to take advantage of some of the benefits. Their job board is free. And, yes, the seminars etc. are good, but I'm not sure you have to join to attend one -- just pay a higher tuition or attendance fee.

I got my current job through the IABC job board. (But I didn't apply online -- sent a snail mail resume and clips.)

Part of the value is if you live in a city where there's an active chapter. Regular networking, volunteering on committees, etc. will help you build relationships and may lead to freelance work or a job.

If you're not going to be part of a chapter, then the previous poster is correct. You can get much of the benefit without joining.
