I haven't been a regular attendee for a couple of years, but the one's I have been to have been pretty solid affairs. I agree with the others that they can be kind of cliquish...or appear to be. I tend to go by myself so those folks could have randomly linked up, but as it was mentioned by someone else: we're journalists...we should have to worry about that sort of thing. Jump in and start talking! If you feel left out, it's you're own fault by my estimation. |
| Homer | Posted 4/11/2008 4:46:17 PM | show profile I've never attended one, but just wondered, why are there so few media at a media event? Aren't the attendees from "Media" Bistro? What's the screening process for becoming a member here (I can't recall, so long ago since I signed on...) Maybe that's the problem. Maybe invitees should be able to prove they're in the business somehow. Then, perhaps there should be a rule about only inviting a guest who is also in the media. If attendees want to keep it "pure", i.e., media only, some tough rules should be in place. Then again, the bottom line may take priority here, I don't know. I used to attend a media golf tournament but three-quarters of the participants were not remotely connected to the media. I don't have a problem with that -- if you don't call it a "media" golf tournament... |
| linjohn | Posted 4/11/2008 6:33:39 PM | show profile I'm a publicist and I keep getting invited to MB's "media-only" parties. That's probably not that out of place, except that the invites don't come through my work email, but to a Yahoo address I gave for an MB blogging party last year. So I imagine they must also be going to other bloggers who have nothing to do with media. In response to the screening question, though, to RSVP you do have to list what company you work for, what position you hold, and provide an email address for them to confirm. I suppose anyone could make something up, but it seems like quite an effort for an event that doesn't even offer open bar. |
| minoric | Posted 5/1/2008 12:44:02 PM | show profile | email poster LA parties no better What I don't get about MB parties is that they always stress "no networking!" on the invitations. Why ELSE would we want to attend these functions?? The whole point of wanting to hang out with other writers/editors is to talk shop and network. And I agree with the rest of you; the screening process stinks. Every time I check out "Media ONLY!" party photos, the captions indicate that most people in attendance are retail clerks, actors or PR folk. I mean, it's there. In print. My first MediaBistro event was great. They used to do dinners instead of mixers, and each of us had to make the reservation ahead of time and pay ahead of time for the pre-set meal. Instead of one, large table, we were broken up into groups of 8 or so, at round tables making it easy to converse. I actually met a person at the one and only dinner I attended that ended up in a great freelance gig that I am still doing today (4 years later). If MediaBistro would like to host such dinners again, I would HAPPILY donate my time and efforts to plan them here in Los Angeles. |
| mkelly | Posted 5/1/2008 4:50:58 PM | show profile Boston Parties... ... all but extinct now. Sad, they used to be regular events and almost a sense of community to them. |
| weiss | Posted 5/15/2008 3:20:46 PM | show profile | email poster LA Parties I'm fairly new to LA and looking for a way to network here. I was told about MB parties and have yet to find one here that sounds worth going to. Anyone suggest other networking events? |
| Louisewasnothalfbad | Posted 5/15/2008 3:39:06 PM | show profile The LA brick and mortar office is closing, but the parties are extremely lame. Join the LA Press Club--fewer wannabes, more journos. |
| ranscot | Posted 5/20/2008 3:55:15 PM | show profile | email poster Does one need to be a guild member to get invites to there? Just wondering. |
