OK, so I just finished my first official copyedit. I am going to charge per page. Here's the problem: when the file was originally sent to me, there were 200 pages. After I made the file conform to the house style sheet (which included changing spacing from 1.5 to 1 line space and getting rid of extraneous hard returns), I ended up with only 140 pages. So do I charge based on how many pages were originally sent to me or by how many pages I ended up with?

Was a per-page fee assigned before the project?

If all you did was change spacing to cut the amount of pages down, I would charge for the 140 -- especially if that's their style.

If you cut out a bunch of pages after the spacing, I would charge for those pages because those are pages that you edited.

Hope this helps!

You should define what a "page" is -- for me, it's double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point. One page of a small type in tiny font is going to be more text, and more time/work, than one page of large type in huge font. Make sure your client knows what you're basing your page count on.

Thanks for the advice. I contacted the publisher and everything worked out. I will definitely get clarity before I take the plunge next time.
