Hi. I am a well published freelancer and I have a really timely idea (Passover) that I want to pitch to the NY Times Dining section. I have never been published in the Times, I don't know editors of that section and don't want to bother editors of other sections for advice. Anyone have any suggestions (who to query or send in finished piece, which I never like to do but I would if necessary). Thanks for any advice.

I write for the business section, not the dining section, so this advice may or may not be applicable. First of all, I would NOT send in the finished piece. Query instead.

Also, I don't know any of the assigning eds in the dining section but I know you can get a list of NY Times email addresses via email. Even if your exact editor isn't on there you should be able to find someone who will pass it along to him/her. And it's entirely possible other folks on this board will know the exact ed to direct you to.

Good luck! I've had really good experiences working w/ them.

Pete Wells is the editor. They famously take a long time to review and run stories. I don't know his address but I'd try a bunch of possibilities; one will land you his email. Do NOT send in a finished piece. Send a polished quote.

how do you get the list of editors' emails?

I'd just like to add another voice to the chorus: any information on how to pitch to Dining In/Dining Out would be VERY valuable to me. I have a great story idea, but can't find Wells's email address anywhere. I know NYT addresses can vary--some are first names, some are last names, some have initials--and it's a pretty common name, so I don't want to just make something up.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Oh, and for the person who asked, you can get a list of Times email addresses by emailing staff@nytimes.com, but the Dining editors do not seem to be on there (it's optional).

Try lastname@nytimes.com. That works for some people at the Times.

Yes, The New York Times is looking for freelancers. Most New Yorkers wouldn't think of coming to the suburbs to network, but the Connecticut Press Club had four -- count 'em four -- editors from The New York Times in Stamford last November. Keep checking their website, www.ctpressclub.com.

In case anyone is writing a book, in April they're having three New York literary agents scouting for new authors.

One more thing - Passover is usually a given because it's so big. Why not pitch a Purim piece on food and wine? I'd do it, but my paper would fire me if I wrote for the competition.
