Ugg. I signed on for a new job and every day is a new surprise.

Anyway, I work for two monthly B2B's. The schedule is tight with only two editors, both of whom write for the books. The few contributors require major edits/re-writes. The editors/writers are given a week to edit and write each book. Each book is about 60 pages editorial and 60 ad pages.

The editorial is decided--get this--by the sales department. Editors are TOLD what to write and who to call. Biased doesn't even cover it. Sales team has final say on written/edited articles.

The schedule is much more aggressive than I am used to. The other two weeks of the month are spent on pet projects for other divisions.

Is this industry standard? The editors seemed so burned out. One editor is weaker than the other, so the one editor is complaining that the other is not carrying his workload. I've been told "no" to hiring additional editors/writers.

Run! Run far, far, away!
I've been through that kind of hell (2 editors, trade mag, sales decides content, etc...) and it will never get better. Start looking for other jobs now and get out of there ASAP. If these people are taking advantage of you now, they will always take advantage of you.

Use this as a learning experience, be diplomatic and professional about everything (wouldn't want to burn any bridges or come across as whiney), and stick up for yourself. On the bright side, at least you currently have employement even if it is less than ideal.

I'm sorry this has happened to you and I wish you the best of luck!
