| movinonup | Posted 2/28/2008 5:54:14 PM | show profile I took an extremely involved edit test for a major magazine that asked for feature ideas, plus criticism on a specific section of the book. Got an ambiguous response from the editor, and no interview, which made me think that perhaps I was too harsh with the criticism---I tried to be constructive (offering solutions), but honest. Yes, the editor certainly could have disliked my story ideas, but I just got this feeling that it was the criticism. How should I have better handled this situation? |
| blossom53 | Posted 2/28/2008 6:10:31 PM | show profile Hi Movin. That happened to me quite recently and I was offended, no matter how much I tried to NOT take it personally. But in my case, I took a HUGE edit test, sent it back, and got NO response at all, even after 3 follow-up emails. I thought I at least warranted a "You suck" email. One thing this industry lacks, I believe, is manners. It's a very hard economy out there, and everyone is very stressed out, which I think is no excuse to be cold to anyone after they take the time to take a lengthy edit test. Did you ask the editor for more details? |
| movinonup | Posted 2/29/2008 11:19:07 AM | show profile Thanks for the reply. No, I didn't ask for any kind of explanation, I just thanked the editor for their time and moved on, I really didn't want to bug them. It was a total bummer though because it took me around 20 hours of research and writing. But overall I feel like I might have offended them because ultimately I was critiquing their creative vision, yet that's what they asked me to do. |
