I'm trying to break into writing for Alternative Press. Anyone have any experience with them? Who do I contact and what sections should I am for?

Re: Alternative Press
I'd start with a weekly in your town. I've had trouble finding submission guidelines or any type of email with Village Voice Media but most publishers are pretty cool about it. You can go to aan.org to find a complete listing of weeklies. If you're knew to any of this you could always ask your local weekly if you could do an internship. If not, often the submission guidelines are at the very bottom of the webpage under the heading "Contact." At the very least check the masthead and mail your submission to the papers address.

re: VVM/AP contacts
While it involves maybe too many click-throughs, the motivated would-be freelancer should be able to find contacts on both AP and VVM's papers' sites. For most of the VVM papers, you can go to the 'about us' page (link will be found somewhere near the bottom of the home page). Then scroll down to 'contact us' and find the link that says 'contact a specific staff member.' It'll take you to an online masthead with names and direct e-mail links. Most of the VVM sites share the same general design online (as in real life).

As for AP, alternativepress.com has, first, a list of staff job openings (click 'jobs'). if you get deep into reading the general 'jobs' section of the site, you will find a 'job FAQ' page featuring a Q&A with the mag's EIC. If you read that all the way through, you will find a general e-mail address to which you can send a query and clips. Hey, at least it's a start.

As far as what sections to aim for, FOB stuff is usually a safe bet. Again, you can flip through several copies of the magazine, comparing bylines to the magazine's masthead to figure out which departments often get farmed out to freelancers.

The advice to start getting clips from the alt-weekly circuit is good, though. If you read music coverage in those papers as well as AP, you will notice several recurring names.

In these specific cases, this is all not *too* hard to figure out if you take the time to look thoroughly. (And editors appreciate thorough freelancers.) :)

I can totally help on this, being a music mag writer...
ok...AP is well, big. HOWEVER, they truly need an editor and have advertised this position often. Also, I believe they need a review editor...
I'm qualified, but moving to cleveland and not knowing anyone, or have any housing arragements, or enduring their SLUMPING local economy and crime and weather ain't for me.
good luck! i dunno their freelancing policy.
