Do other freelancers for the business section know which columns specifically (weekends, weekdays) are pitchable, or should I just pitch a standard business story rather than trying to figure out the format? Much of it seems written by columnists, so it's not clear what kind of features they'd freelance out. Any help appreciated. (I've written about business for other national magazines, and for other sections of the NYT.)

ISR, have you tried asking the ed you write under at the Times? He or she might be able to point you towards other sections that use freelancers.

I haven't---I prefer to pitch cold, though I'm not sure why. I suppose I can ask him, though either way I still want to know what's *not* pitchable before I waste the Biz ed's time.

Your call, of course, but I would think it would make a pitch much more likely to be received if it started out with..."My editor, Joe Whatshisname in the business section, was kind enough to refer me to you."
