| The Phantom girl | Posted 3/9/2008 7:16:29 PM | show profile I want to create myself a website for my portfolio. I have a design in mind based on my business cards. I think the two should have a sense of connection. What size should my stage be in flash? Any other tips on starting a website in flash? thanks |
| Letterbox | Posted 3/10/2008 9:36:44 PM | show profile I think Flash is overused. People seem to use it just to use it and it ends up overblown like an action adventure movie. If you're creating a portfolio, keep in mind that art directors may have to plod through animations multiple times to get to the work. Definitely keep it simple and emphasize creative navigation as opposed to something big and flashy. And give visitors a way to bypass any extraneous animation and get right to the menu. And file sizes reasonable. I know everybody has broadband now but if you were to put all of your portfolio pieces into one big Flash file, that could get pretty cumbersome to load. Even on broadband. On some artist sites I see, it takes thirty seconds to get to every new part of the site. |

| spring2007 | Posted 3/12/2008 4:27:00 PM | show profile | email poster I agree that Flash is overused and if you don't use it right, it kills your search engine optimization. There are good things about Flash, though, like the fact that those pages can be updated really easily if you know ActionScript and you have more control over where the viewer's eye goes on the page. The better ones, in my opinion, forget about the big fancy introductions (even if you have a 'skip intro' button), don't use page transitions longer than two seconds (if they use them at all) and tend to use Flash on about half of the actual page (or less). I usually make my pages about 720 px wide and 460 px tall. My business card and webpage look very similar-same colors, text, and other stuff. |
| The Phantom girl | Posted 3/13/2008 9:22:15 PM | show profile this is great advice. Thank you all. Some of the things you've mentioned, I had never thought about before. I think I will create my website in Dreamweaver instead of flash. |
