Topic: New magazine options for AvantGuild members!

| mb_greg | Posted 3/10/2008 6:47:33 PM | show profile | email poster The long-promised changes to our sign-up form are finally live. As of 5:00 this afternoon, all AvantGuild sign-ups will have a choice of four magazine subscriptions with their membership: Wired, New York, W and Bon Appetit. You can choose any, all or none of the four options. If you do not choose a magazine, you won't receive it, though you will still be eligible to receive a refund. (Incidentally, if all you're interested in is receiving the refund, you should select "No" for that title. If you select "Yes", you forfeit your right to the refund. Also, make sure to provide an address so the magazines will know where to send the subscriptions/refunds.) As for the new titles, we hope you'll enjoy them, but this list is by no means final. In fact, one of the benefits of this new set up is that we can track in real time which magazines are the most popular. We're trying out the two new titles (W and Bon Appetit) on a trial basis. We'll continue to research new options -- yes, that includes fan-favorites Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. Anyway, you can view the new sign-up form at mediabistro.com/memberscenter/agregister.asp. Please let me know what you think. Best, ------ Greg Membership Director mediabistro.com |
| artist-at-large | Posted 3/11/2008 1:13:31 AM | show profile Hmmm ... so I renewed my membership two days too early? |
| rhino writer | Posted 3/11/2008 11:57:11 AM | show profile I like the choices, and I like being able to pick none for the refund. Thanks! |
| Canadiana | Posted 3/11/2008 1:02:21 PM | show profile I admit I haven't clicked on the link yet but: does this apply to Canadians/international members? Thank you! |
| Canadiana | Posted 3/11/2008 7:54:37 PM | show profile Okay, so I clicked on the link now and all four selections are only offered to U.S. residents. So, do internationals get a refund for that part of it? |
| maphop | Posted 3/18/2008 12:11:32 PM | show profile Existing Avant Guild Members? Greg: So what if you're an existing Avant Guild member who has declined Wired and New York but is interested in one of the new titles? I don't want to sign up for another term since my latest renewal is only six weeks old but it seems like the new system kind of leaves a whole bunch of folks out in the cold... I've always wondered why either "Writers Digest" or "Writer" aren't offered...maybe they aren't interested in the discounted/gift opportunity through MediaBistro? |
| mb_greg | Posted 3/18/2008 6:33:36 PM | show profile | email poster First of all, to those who signed up just before this change went into effect, obviously you have to draw a line somewhere. That said, if your purchase was recent, shoot me an email and I'll see what I can do. As for those outside the United States, unfortunately the magazines are only willing to make this offer to U.S. addresses (understandably, since they can't be expected to pay foreign postage on complimentary subscriptions). You are certainly free to enter a U.S. address and have the magazines sent to a friend, and if it's a good enough friend, maybe you can even ask her to pass along your refund check. Please let me know if you have any other questions. ------ Greg Membership Director mediabistro.com |

| lilah78 | Posted 5/13/2008 9:11:02 PM | show profile | email poster Greg, Does MB have any plans to add any other magazine options? Perhaps a women's mag or other general interest titles? Just curious. Thanks! |
| mb_greg | Posted 5/14/2008 12:14:08 PM | show profile | email poster Lilah. First of all, we're always considering new magazine options based on your feedback (and your "votes", in terms of which magazines you select when you sign up). What specifically are you thinking of when you say a "women's" magazine? A couple of the other genres we're exploring are travel and what I think of as "writers" magazines -- the kinds of titles that run long, meaty articles that our members either write or aspire to one day write. The archetypical example would be The New Yorker, although our chances of getting that title are slim to none. (New York magazine kind of fits that description, but it's still perceived -- unfairly, IMO -- as a regional title.) Please continue to post or email suggestions, and we'll do the best we can. As I've said before, it's a delicate balancing act between finding titles that are are willing to participate in promotions such as this and finding those that are valued by our members, but we'll continue to do the best we can. Thanks. ------ Greg Membership Director mediabistro.com |
| rhino writer | Posted 5/14/2008 5:15:38 PM | show profile American Scholar is a great mag. |
| lilah78 | Posted 5/16/2008 3:26:21 PM | show profile Perhaps Elle or Vogue? I also like the idea of a publication for writers--I'm a big fan of Poets and Writers, but have heard good things about Writers' Digest, too. |
| DQ102 | Posted 5/19/2008 5:24:08 PM | show profile I would love it if you offered Poets & Writers. |
| mb_greg | Posted 5/19/2008 6:35:46 PM | show profile | email poster New magazine The bad news is that we can no longer offer Bon Appetit -- Conde Nast informed us that they already hit their partnership quota for the year, so they have to pull it. The good news is that they allowed us to substitute Gourmet magazine instead. Hope you enjoy it, and please continue to post feedback and suggestions for other titles here, or send them via email.
