I want to work in broadcast journalism, but I'm very unsure what to do now that I've graduated. I'd like to be a reporter, but I'm not a diva. I just love TV and I love telling stories.

I had planned on going to law school in hopes of becoming a legal analyst (and assuring myself a lucrative plan-b), but now I've decided that's too much time and money to end up with no experience. I want a job as a reporter. I also want to relocate.

Here's what I have-
~2 bachelor's degrees, a good gpa, honors standing, academic awards, and all that good stuff.
~A good bit of college tv experience, on-air and behind the camera, writing, control room experience, making packages, editing, etc.
~radio experience, working as a dj
~an internship with Fox News Channel

Here's what I don't have-
~a journalism degree (mine are in international studies and theater)
~a huge amount of time to search for jobs (I work full time at a law firm)
~any idea what to do

Please help me because I want to be a part of this industry so badly!

Suggest you look in the hinterlands for a TV reporting job somewhere you don't want to stay, but where you can get a job for a couple years and some decent clips.

I have friends who paid dues in places like Texas (Tyler, Harlingen), Louisiana and Arkansas.

You will need a decent tape.

Get there, develop/exhibit your talent, take on every challenge, and get your foot in the door.

Good luck!

Thanks alot! Also, is there any reason to go to journalism grad school? I know someone who got her masters at Northwestern and really thought it helped alot, but others say it's not necessary...what do you think?

Keep checking www.ctpressclub.com. In May they will honor Faith Middleton (NPR) with their big award. Other awards go to News12 so you can network with people from there.

If you want to read past threads about getting a graduate degree in journalism, try searching under 'waste of time' or 'squander your money.'

I REALLY wouldn't advise you to get a masters in journalism for a broadcasting job. just my opinion.

THat you love TV and you love telling stories doesn't actually translate into being an on-camera reporter. You will need a demo reel, plus the demonstrated ability to shoot and cut, as some places will want a one-person band.

If you have those skills, you might be able to get yourself some sort of digital journalist gig, either for a website, a newspaper with a strong web presence and/or a station in a small market.

It also helps to be good looking.
