| kimico | Posted 3/16/2008 10:01:23 PM | show profile Hello! I'm a beginning freelance magazine writer and I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice on where to find the neweset research (stats or scientific) before everyone else gets to it... Seems to be the most difficult part of magazine writing, giving things a fresh angle when it's already been written many times before. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks! |
| HisGirlFriday | Posted 3/17/2008 9:54:21 AM | show profile You need to be a little more specific. What type of "newest research" are you looking for? About automobile trends? Sheep farming? Heart transplants? Every subject under the sun will have experts, trade mags, research facilities, etc. Go to them and keep track of what they are doing. |
| kimico | Posted 3/17/2008 11:48:19 AM | show profile General interest/women's magazines are what I'm looking to write for, so sheep farming is a less likely topic, although if it has some sort of environmental impact or even an animal right's issue, I'd be interested...health research is a paticular interest of mine, but anything that could be angled for a story would work. |

Do most freelancers typically get their ideas from the daily news at CNN.com (for example), like everyone else, or are there other sources out there that I don't know about? |
