Hi everyone,

I'm a graduating senior majoring in journalism and I've been in contact with both Gannett and MediaNews Group recruiters. I've already read up on Gannett and the impression I'm getting is that I should avoid them. What can anyone tell me about MNG, specifically the York Daily Record? According to Wikipedia, as of October 2007, employees at YDR are still working without a contract.

If both of these companies are undesirable, can anyone recommend any desirable media companies to look to for an entry level job?

Many thanks in advance.

I can tell you that, in California, MediaNews Group pays well under what it should (try low $30,000s for an assistant editor in the Bay Area), has asked its staff at some papers to take pay cuts, is laying off at other papers (notably the SJ Merc) -- just a really cheap, unsteady operation.

However, for entry-level and short-term, desireability probably doesn't matter so much; what matters more is landing in a place where you'll get good guidance to grow as a journalist and get great clips.

Thanks for the reply. I should have stated this in my original post, but I would probably be working as either a page or graphic designer -- how would these positions compare to reporter in terms of pay, stress, etc. at these companies?

Also, would anyone recommend working for Gannett over MNG?
