| al1184ster | Posted 3/18/2008 10:15:38 PM | show profile I am a recent college graduate. I work at a small weekly in New Jersey and hope to go to graduate school for journalism. My problem is my pay. I don't make enough to live in Northern New Jersey. My cash is running out fast so I need another job. Does anyone know of a way I could write at night or on the weekends to make money? I would much rather do some writing than work as a waiter or bartender. Nothing against these jobs, I just want to do as much as I can to get into good J-school. - Poor Jersey Boy |

Your best bet is to get a solid money job -- waiting tables, bartending, hosting, bookstore, delivery, whatever. You need a steady paycheck and writing side jobs won't do that. The added benefit of having a solid money job is that you can be a wee bit pickier about writing jobs and build a good clip portfolio. Everyone in the industry knows its nearly impossible to make a living wage as a starting writer so there's no shame in the side job. |

At this stage, weekend and nighttime writing jobs would likely pay much less than a subsistent waiter or bartender job. That's OK, if you're doing them to gain experience and clips, but if your primary need is an infusion of quick cash, it's probably not the best use of your time. |
