I am a soon to be college graduate (two BA's Communication & English) this May. I know I want to pursue a career in Magazine publishing but I have no idea how to get my foot in the door. I recently applied to the NYU Publishing Institute (waiting on a acceptance letter, well crossing my fingers actually), but other than expensive programs such as these I don't know where to begin. I live in SA, Texas and would like to find a job or internship around the area but if I have to relocate I will.

Can anyone give some tips on where and how to start?

In your area
Your school itself would be a good resource for finding out if there are any alumni working at magazines in the San Antonio area.

As you are probably aware, there are a number of magazines published in San Antonio.

These include C San Antonio, www.csantonio.com, a lifestyle magazine; and the various magazines published by Pixel Works Corp, which include Bravo San Antonio, San Antonio Woman, S. Texas Fitness and Health, and SA At Home. (www.pixelworkscorporation.com)

There is also the San Antonio- South Texas Design Guide, www.designguideftp.com. You can read this magazine online.

Once you've checked out the websites and located physical copies of these magazines and familiarized yourself with them, put together the best darned package you can. Write a kick-ass letter introducing yourself and showing that you have read the magazines and have enthusiasm and something to offer.

If you want to be in magazine PUBLISHING (as a publisher) your background in Communications/English will be helpful. However, PUBLISHING per se will be about sales and profitability at least in the lowers echelons, so I'd look for a sales-type job, perhaps at a regional magazine or medium sized newspaper group, places there are often relatively entry-level jobs.

There are a couple websites where you may be able to get glimpses into the issues publishers face (shrinking ad dollars, higher cost of print and circulation, changing demographics, etc) --- might check out:

Since San Antonio has a big hispanic market, might check out
http://www.magazine.org/Advertising_and_PIB/MPAHispMktPro.pdf

I don't know if this will be helpful but maybe:

You may wish to look for books or articles online about the magazine publishing business, just to get you started.

GOod luck!
