I'd like to know how much time everyone is scheduling to proofread (editing for grammar and consistency) per page (250 words per page).

I'm currently having some budgeting issues with my place of employment and I need something to help back me up that they need to schedule more time for the proofreading.

And considering that I've just been given 4 hours to proofread a 15,875 word document for the 100th time, I was hoping to get some other opinions...I'm trying to get them to budget 10 minute per page, although I really think it should be around 12.

If anyone has some resources for estimated paces that would be fantastic also. Thanks in advance!

If you go here:

http://www.the-efa.org/res/rates.html

the Editorial Freelancers Association has a chart of commonly accepted page-per-hour paces and rates for copy editing and proofreading, etc. Basically, 5-10 pp/hr for copy editing, 3-10 pp/hr for proofreading. Good luck!

If you're editing for grammar & consistency--if you really have to make more than a few changes--I'd call that copyediting, and thus, they should expect it to take longer. I proofread books at 10-15 pph, but that's because they've already been edited and don't require a lot of changes. Changes are what take time.

If it's the 100th round for this piece, there shouldn't be many changes anymore, should there?

Oops, no - I meant they keep requesting that I copyedit long documents in less time then is really possible. There's always many, many changes.

I'm regularly asked to proofread a document that's anywhere from 50-100 pages, but I'm only given 2 to 4 hours to do it in. Budgeting is very important here, as everything is pre-budgeted for the client, then billed out.

This is the first time anyone reviewing this document. Thank you!

For proofreading, I usually do about 12-15 pages an hour and for copyediting about 8-10. It depends how messy the document is and how many changes need to be made. It sounds like you are getting rushed a bit.
