I am branching out to include personal essays. Since this is new to me, I have no idea what magazines accept these pitches. Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to reach both men and women.

Hi Katie - MB posted an article not that long ago on markets that accept personal essays. It was actually a 2-part series. I'm sure if you run a search on the site you can find it (I've done it myself a couple times). Good luck!

You generally don't pitch essays. You write the entire piece
and send it off, on spec. I recommend studying your markets first. Read a bunch of the essays they have published, read
a few issues of the pubs you are targeting to a sense
of their style and content.

In my experience, almost every magazine will take essays, even if they don't run them normally. I've sold essays, for example, to trade magazines whose guidelines say they officially don't consider them.

So I would worry less about what magazines accept essays that what magazines the essay seems a fit for.
