I am about to relocate to Philadelphia because my husband got a new job. On journalismjobs.com there is an ad for a GA reporter at the Philadelphia Tribune, described in the ad as an "award-winning African-American newspaper." I've lived in Philly before and I'm familiar with the paper. It's pretty well-respected and widely read. I'm not black; do you think I should bother applying?

If you're qualified for the job, why not?
Have you read the paper? Do you feel you can write the kind of articles they publish (btw, just because it's AA owned doesn't mean they only cover AA-centered pieces)?

I have worked at many pubs where I was the only minority there. I get uncomfortable for about 5 minutes and then get on with it.

I'm African-American and every job that I have worked at, I have been the minority. You get over it...you write your ass off..and your talent will speak for itself. Editors want good material, as long as you can churn out stories, nobody cares what color you are.

As long as you have read the paper more than three times, and you're comfortable with the content, why not?

I only say this because I'm African-American and I've read some A-A magazines and newspapers that read like editorials (when they were supposed to be "news"; they were one-sided, with things like "our news." Some of the content was so one-sided that it was almost like propaganda, not telling a balanced story. They only told the story from an African-American's point of view, or what they thought was an African-American's point of view.

This is not to say that all African-American's newspapers are this way.

I'm trying to figure out what the paragraph following the opening sentence had to do with anything...

Some newspapers have biases that they don't try to hide. For example, most progressives would be very uncomfortable working at the Western Pennsylvania Tribune Review and some people might be very uncomfortable working for the Unification Church owned Washington Times, even though both papers are mainstream publications. That's all the last poster meant.

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to give it a shot.
