| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 3/30/2008 10:00:56 PM | show profile | email poster I'm trying to place a story I wrote on a specific form of female sexual dysfunction and its philosophical and societal impacts. I think it would fit best at a non-traditional women's magazine like Bust or Bee. Jane's gone. Bitch deals more with pop culture. Are there any other pubs I'm missing? Thanks. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 3/31/2008 5:21:13 PM | show profile anyone? |
| snappiness | Posted 3/31/2008 5:30:32 PM | show profile Is Psychology Today still around? Maybe you could tweak it for that. I'm thinking along health lines -- If there are recent studies on the topic then perhaps Prevention? Although if it's too edgy, maybe not. |
| Decorama | Posted 3/31/2008 5:46:01 PM | show profile Well . . . Elle sometimes has very good health/ psychology articles. Pretty in-depth. I recall one about why men cheat written by the author of Listening to Prozac. I was rather surprised and very impressed. I know you're looking for something more alternative, but if the topic isn't overly obscure, why not? |
| Canadiana | Posted 4/1/2008 4:41:16 AM | show profile Marie Claire has at least one serious/indepth feature on an important topic in each issue. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 4/1/2008 6:55:20 AM | show profile thanks everyone for the suggestions. I've considered Marie Claire and Elle but I think this piece isn't really for them. Plus I don't have any national clips. I'm trying to think of a smaller pub that would be open to a new writer. |
| TheSecondShift | Posted 4/1/2008 10:35:24 AM | show profile Shoot for the Stars Don't sell yourself short because you don't have national pub clips. If the idea is a good one, an editor will take a chance. This might be your foot in the door. |
| Canadiana | Posted 4/1/2008 10:36:24 AM | show profile Try national anyway -- what have you got to lose? Good luck, Lisa p.s. There's a new Canadian mag called Best Health launched just recently. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 4/2/2008 10:39:55 AM | show profile I'm thinking about tangomag. Does anyone have any thoughts on them? Thanks Canadiana. The experts I've interviewed are all American - how maple leafy do submissions to Canadian mags have to be. |
| kimico | Posted 4/2/2008 1:50:58 PM | show profile You might try looking into BUST - it's hard to say if you're article's right without knowing more about it, but they are a bit more edge-y, with a pretty strong feminist angle. |
| Canadiana | Posted 4/2/2008 2:55:28 PM | show profile I think there's a How To Pitch or a Pitch Slam (or whatever they call it) video here on MB for Tango. Hey, love the "maple leafy" comment - cute! I've not yet read Best Health but for the long-standing national pubs - Chatelaine, Canadian Living, Canadian Family, Today's Parent, etc., most of your sources would have to be Canucks. That being said, the Cdn version of More seems to have a lot of American content. |
| joyeuxnoelle | Posted 4/2/2008 5:00:28 PM | show profile Thanks Kim. I pitched Bust a month or so ago. I followed up recently, no response. I hear they can take months and months to get back to you, if at all. Canadiana - My sources on this piece are American. But thanks. |
