If all the nat'l pubs keep rejecting you?? This is getting frustrating.

Are you pitching pieces that they would be most likely to give to someone without a whole lot of national clips? In other words, if you're pitching feature stories at this point, you're probably never going to get the additional clips. If you are aggressively seeking to meet various publications' needs in departments where they use freelancers and submitting well-researched pitches for 300-word briefs, they are more likely to give you a chance.
Getting some clips from well-respected websites might also help.

I agree that it's frustrating. It's a long process and often it seems as if editors want you to have written extensively on the exact same topic for their competitors before they'll give you an assignment.

I did it the same way a lot did. I pitched and got front of the book pieces, doing 200 word articles until they trusted me with longer pieces, and then did really good features for local pubs that were good samples.

Thanks. I've been pitching short 200-word piece ideas. What sorts of national mags did you start out with, dribble??

You make a good point about continuing to write feature-length stories for locals, dribbledrive. After all, you'll never move beyond FOB assignments if you can't also demonstrate being comfortable with longer pieces.
