Topic: how to represent an inflated title?

| Suet | Posted 4/3/2008 5:39:04 PM | show profile I worked for a long time for a company that had lots of wage freezes (0-3%). The only way to give someone more money was to promote them. We had lots of Senior Associate This, Senior Manager of That's. So I'm stuck with a Senior title that doesn't match up to the job descriptions I read. But I don't think I should jettison that part of my official title. At the same time, when I apply for non-Senior positions in my discipline, I imagine people think I'm trying to take a pay + responsibility cut. How do you deal with title inflation? Just explain what happened? Deemphasize your title? Thanks. |

Make sure that you are applying for jobs that match what you have done and can do and make that clear on your resume. Titles vary across different companies, at a bank I once worked at, just about everyone had a VP title, but none were doing VP level work. Depending on where you are applying, you could consider changing your title to reflect the job you are applying for and see if you get more bites that way. As long as the title on your resume reflects the work you were doing, you should be fine. |
