Has anyone here made the switch from editorial in magazine (either trade or consumer) publishing to book publishing? If so, did your years of editorial experience, albeit in a different print medium, qualify toward your position or did you have to start from the bottom of the totem pole? How easy/hard is it to make the transition? And ultimately, were you happy you made the change? Oh, and one more thing, are the hours and pay in books any better or worse than in mags?

Yes. Yes. Easy. Happy. Pay rates are similar to magazines, in that entry level positions pay poorly, mid-level entry points (associate, senior associate, assistant manager, etc.) pay better.

Thanks, westsidestory. Any advice for someone who aspires to follow in your footsteps?

I also made this switch, although the company I work for publishes online content as well as books. At a magazine, I worked in research, but I also did a small amount of writing and editing. When I applied for the job I'm in now, I emphasized that I wanted to be in a position where I could do more reporting and writing. The pay is a little better, and I didn't have to start at the bottom. In general, I've been happy with the change, but sometimes I do miss working for a magazine.

I moved from trade mags back to books, and although I'm sure my previous experience in book publishing helped, the transition was easy. In my experience, pay is better in mags, but the hours I worked were ridiculous, and so was the stress level. I'm much happier in books!

Thanks! It's a relief that most of what everyone said is positive and encouraging. I appreciate it. I'm sure I'll miss working at a magazine, but at the same time I'm excited to get back to literature and anything unrelated to journalism (I work for a trade mag and have become jaded by the industry). I'm not too fond of reporting, but I love writing, reading, and editing. Hopefully a career in books is a better fit for me.
