NYU offers a Masters in Science in Publishing. Do any of you have any thoughts or comments on this program?

I am not a fan of the NYU programme, personally.

It was almost criminally poor in the late 90s/early 00s.

Just one example - they couldn't find an instructor for a certain graphics class. So they tried to pass off a different class entirely on us.

I pointed out to them that we had a curriculum, and that the class did not meet the curriculum, and that I would talk to the state of New York about their accreditation if they didn't change it to what was on the curriculum.

(The instructor, who routinely taught for another division of SCPS, didn't give a crap about my concerns.)

They ultimately changed the class to suit the curriculum. But really, as I pointed out to them, I had received better quality instruction in some continuing education classes at a local high school than I received in some of the classes at NYU. And we were paying about 10 times as much.

I have been told that they made some improvements to it since then, to make it more rigorous. I hope that is the case, because they also raised the tuition 50 percent right after I finished the program.

I've been considering this program and the same one at Pace for over a year. Pzach, why don't you like the program?

Did anyone find it helpful in the industry? I'm currently an editor, but I'd like to learn more about other aspects of publishing, including the business. I understand the importance of experience, and I've been working for almost three years, but I would think getting an advanced degree would also be useful.

I also took a course in the Pace program. The instructor would start with"what's going on in the publishing industry today?" - i.e., a complete waste.

Again, it may be better these days. But it reminded me of high school - people eating their McDonald's and talking and goofing off while the instructor tried to kill the time.

pace
I agree. I got my Masters at Pace while I was working in publishing. I learned more at work and I knew more than the teachers frankly. It didn't help at all. Luckily my company paid for it or it would have been a complete waste of money.
Now I am at a pretty senior level in book publishing and no one has ever mentioned my degree or seemed to care about it.
But feel free to email me if you want more details. And I graduated in 2004 so maybe it changed but I doubt it.

Not to be mean but you are supposed to learn more at work. There's but so much a class can tell you without you getting hands-on experience.

I took several courses with Pace and it has helped me greatly in Publishing. I took the courses from 2002-2004

No prospective employer has cared about my master's in publishing from NYU.

NYU is pretty severe and relentless in marketing their programs, and people just think, well, NYU says it's so wonderful, and it costs a lot, this must really be something that will open doors for me.

But I think they have it confused with the other divisions, which have classes taught by educators, not "industry professionals" (i.e., about half of the time, people who 'wing it' - I think a few of my instructors were there to meet younger, impressionable students).

OK, here's another story about it - a class taught by someone who worked at The Deal - the instructor was several weeks late in giving us back our final projects. Then she told the program administrator to tell us that our final projects had been "lost in the mail". (As in, she wrote comments in pen on our projects, and mailed them back to NYU SCPS and didn't photocopy them or type them or email them.... this being the 21st century I think she thought that was the most efficient means of communicating, and that the USPS never lost anything ... either that or she blew it off, your call.)

Again, all it took was yelling and screaming from me (so many of my fellow students were either complacent or unwilling to "challenge authorities") to get the instructor to scribble some more comments on our projects.

That type of BS is intolerable when you're paying 4 figures for a class!

Of course you're supposed to learn more at work. But I was a little assistant with barely any experience when I took classes at Pace - and I knew more than the instructors.

Hey Imagine22.....can i be blatant enough and ask for advice about jobs?
Seems you have worked your way up into the book publishing industry and that's precisely what I am trying to do as well. I have 6 years experience in advertising & media planning but wanted to change my line of work after moving to the US. I am completing a 6 month internship at a literary agency in the city (almost done with it now) and frequently get complimented by my boss about my gut feel with projects and my editorial skills even though I have no prior experience.
I am also planning to take the NYU summer sessions, which are not very expensive but are great for networking.

I have applied in several publishing houses for an editorial assistant position and many people have called back in response to my resume. The process is however very slow and I need to get a job.

Am I doing something wrong or can I be doing something better?

Please please help.

Thanks,
Meeta!
