Is it okay to reference AP and Reuters reporting within a magazine story? E.g. if a designer gave a quote to "Reuters," can that quote be leveraged elsewhere?

AP & Reuters
If by "leveraged" you mean can the quote be used elsewhere, the answer is yes and no. Yes, somebody could write that a designer told Reuters, "...XXX." But if I were the magazine editor, I wouldn't be keen on inserting a quote from another news organization unless the quote was somehow extra special or especially newsworthy. To do so would be tacky, and it essentially means that the writer didn't have enough access to the designer to get the quote herself.

freelancing for AP
This is slightly off topic, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience freelancing for the AP.

I've never heard of somebody freelancing for AP, but that could be only on the news side. Perhaps in arts and entertainment or some other culture beat, they work with freelancers.

I've known AP stringers, which is I think all they use. You get a contract to be a stringer and they ask you to cover certain things and you can pitch certain things. I think you probably have to interview to become a stringer.
