Does anyone know how or where you train to become a Media Trainer? I have many years experience in print and broadcast journalism and would like to make the transition into a consultancy role. I have obviously developed my own ideas on what works and what doesn't, but I'd still like to find some formalized training on how and what to teach prospective clients. Is there a professional body for Media Trainers? Is there a diploma for which you can study? Any advice would be much appreciated.

We had someone come in and do media training for the senior people at our non-profit org. The trainer ended up not charging us though he had years of experience.

So, what I would suggest is to develop a tight presentation/session and use a NPO group or friends/relatives as [free] guinea pigs. If you do a good job, you can get a reference from them and move on from there.

You might look for training on giving seminars (regardless of topic). I trained myself in this area (although I had a smattering of education background) and organized and gave seminars related to PR and also to journalism (that one for students). My first work was done pro bono for a couple organizations, after that I charged.

However, I was in a unique market position I think as I was fairly well-known because of work I'd done for several area news outlets.

Also, might check out the FabJob Guide to Become a Corporate Trainer. The FabJob guides are cool, because each one is devoted to a specific career.

You may also want to solicit your services to local PR agencies/firms. I am currently at an agency and we work with a few select members of the press for extensive media coaching for our clients.

Gettting a foot in the door there may lead to other opportunities, or at least valuable experience.
