| campbell | Posted 4/17/2008 3:20:12 PM | show profile Through the other threads, I noticed a lot of talk about this area. Is there a trick to making the leap? I've written for national mags, newspapers and trades and wonder if I'm missing some potential clients. Thanks! |
| DHernandez | Posted 4/17/2008 5:00:48 PM | show profile No trick. How are you approaching them? A letter of introduction and clips works well. |
| dribbledrive1 | Posted 4/17/2008 5:48:52 PM | show profile I don't find there's a trick. I just call or send material. I do find I often don't hear back from people. |
| snappiness | Posted 4/17/2008 7:20:20 PM | show profile Custom pubs come and go quickly since they are based not on circulation but a client's whim. Also, they're often printed quarterly, so long lead times. It's a tough gig for editors. |
| campbell | Posted 4/17/2008 7:31:45 PM | show profile I guess I'm unclear on who publishes them - is there a clearinghouse publisher, is it through their ad agencies or are they an adjunct to big media outlets? Also, are there on-line versions -I'm feeling a bit like a dinosaur the way I cling to the print stuff. |
| observer | Posted 4/17/2008 8:03:43 PM | show profile there are independent companies that are custom publishing houses but some magazines have a custom publishing division - Sunset magazine here in the SF Bay Area has a custom publishing division |
| snappiness | Posted 4/17/2008 8:49:20 PM | show profile Pretty much every printing house has a custom publishing arm. Time Inc and Amex are two I've worked for, plus a few independents that contract to do custom publishing for big credit card and financial service companies. |
