I'm creating a website so that editors can look at samples of my work and was wondering if anyone had any hosts they'd recommend.

I've looked at GoDaddy.com, Startlogic, MacHighway...and tons more. All seem like they're offering an overwhelming amount of things. I don't even know what I should be looking for in a web host!

The site is very simple and shouldn't take up much space, aside from a Home, About Me, Clips Page (and about 17 other pages, each for the clip it corresponds with) and a contact me page, it won't be very heavy on images, just mostly text. Also, I use a Mac, and I've seen on some hosts it says they're Mac-friendly. How important is this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Mac-friendly is not an important requirement for hosting. Mac systems use Unix/Linux type operating systems and many popular tools [i.e., WordPress, forums, etc] are developed for Linux platforms.

I would choose a Linux host over a Windows host because their are more free tools that work on that platform. How much do you want to spending on hosting? Check some free demo templates I maintain here: http://hosting-q.com/design_demos. This is a top level directory-- just click on any link to see a demo. These templates are free from oswd.org.

Let me know if you need hosting [hosting-q.com].

I used to use GoDaddy and often had trouble when I was updating pages on my site (like you, it wasn't many pages--usually it happened when I was just adding a clip). Then a friend mentioned that she uses Wordpress for her personal website, and so I tried that. Once you figure out how to create pages (instead of blogs) through your site on there, it's really easy -- and it's free! You can, of course, set up your own URL (e.g.- www.yourname.com) to forward to your Wordpress site very easily. One of the things I really like about Wordpress, too, is that it has forums where users post questions and responses about any problems/questions/etc. they have about their sites. (I use a Mac, and find it works well).

You could also try .Mac. I haven't really used it, but I know many people who have, and it is supposed to be easy to use. Good luck!

I have used both yahoo and godaddy. Godaddy has incredible support; you can contact them anytime of day. They are very good at helping with an issue. Godaddy also has some pretty good tools in setting up either a merchant account or standard site. If you do use Godaddy make sure you back up your website in multiple iterations as supplied by their software. Yahoo isn't as good with customer support imo. Good luck!

Additionally you will have to pay extra for 17 web pages. You could always turn your computer into a server using free software.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind. Are any of you familiar with bluehost.com? It's another one I've stumbled upon and I'm curious if anyone's used them...

I had Godaddy at one point and couldn't stand their customer support. It gets really old having people talk down to you.

I'm currently using A Small Orange-- very reasonable and I've had a great experience with them.

I just put up my website using GoDaddy, so far, so good!
I am thinking of linking to wordpress for a blogpage though.

Pair.com

They host my sites, but I register at Godaddy. I would never host with GoDaddy.

bluehost is good
I was using pair.com for years, good service, they never went down. But for less money, I went with bluehost and have more options now. I'm happy with bluehost.
