| chucho | Posted 4/21/2008 7:34:18 AM | show profile Uh, polygamy is not legal in Germany. There is some limited recognition if polygamous status among immigrants -- but, and this is important to note, this recognition amounts to a recognition that wives have legal right to inheritances that is divided equally among the wives. That is not shariah law. Shariah law is far more mysogynistic: women get less than men. What Germany has done is recognized that women immigrants from Islamic countries that have legalized the barbaric concept of polygamy would be hidden away by their disgusting husbands if they knew that Germany would prosecute them. This law is actually an attempt to provide these women with more legal protection and rights than they would have if they were allowed to be hidden away out of fear of prosecution. It's kind of like saying abortion is legal in the USA as some evidence of a conspiracy to murder unborn children, when in fact abortion is legal in the USA because if it's illegal, women would seek illegal and unsafe situations to get abortions. In Germany, if they went after Muslim polygamists, the women would be stuttered in their homes and hid away from, say, access to spousal benefits to health care and right to inheritances. Children would also be affected. But, again, polygamy is not recognized in Germany. A person cannot marry more than one spouse. It's a classic liberal stance: kind of like needle-exchange programs in Holland: using heroin is illegal, but pragmatically speaking Holland provides clean needles to addicts in an attempt at a "greater good" of preventing the spread of AIDS. I realize this is an "elitist" and "nuanced" argument, but there you go. Europe has an immigrant problem far greater than America has. But this guy is definitely not accurately representing things when he says that Germany recognizes polygamist marriages. (In fact, Germany recognizing that wives married into such situations abroad who later come to Germany have equal rights to inheritance is actually ANATHEMA to Shariah law. DUH!) |
