I'm a freelancer who's about to relocate to Los Angeles. I'm wondering if anyone on this board has experience with the L.A. Press Club. Any reason I should/shouldn't join? Thanks for any input...

If the venue's handy for you, why not? There aren't any detriments in joining, and some of the members hire freelancers or can lead you to freelance work -- this I know first-hand, because although I'm not a member (location's unhandy for me) I have gotten assignments from those people.

As a freelancer, you may also like to check out Independent Writers of Southern California -- www.iwosc.org -- which meets more often and in more locations.

They have some cool events; lots of parties at good venues for big name authors and TV people. I'd join just to get the invitations.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm focused on print, especially magazines, so do you think the parties/events would be relevant to me? Basically, I'm looking for something to replace the alumni events I attend now at the Berkeley journalism school, where editors from various publications come and offer insight, often tailored specifically to freelancers. Would the L.A. Press Club be my only sort of equivalent in SoCal or are there other resources I should know about? I'll be living in West L.A.

Hi Yam, the press club seems like its mostly made up of LA Times reporters so I think you would like it. Plus compared to NYC, there's not a lot of "print" in LA or organizations and clubs that cater to journalists or freelancers...everyone out here is writing scripts, not magazine or newspaper articles.
