I'm an editorial designer considering the jump to the "dark side" as design director (equivalent of associate art director in magazine language) at the in-house creative team of a prestigious new-york-based fashion/luxury brand.

Do any of you, oh wise elders of graphic design, know what an average salary for such a job might be? My guess stops at "more than publishing would pay", and I would love to be prepared to give a reasonable salary requirement.

Many thanks!

This may be too late but...
I am also in the editorial/publishing realm, but have had friends move to agencies (about 7-8 years ago) and start at $70k + bonuses. So I would think at least $80k + bonus would be reasonable now. And depending on the agency and your performance, could receive up to $20k+ in bonuses. But you really need your negotiation skills in top form.

Then, performance is the key factor since many agencies have bi-annual or even quarterly "head cutting" sessions to keep only the best talent. Know what you're getting into before you make the jump.

Good luck!
