I am newly unemployed after working as writer/editor/pr with one magazine for last five years and this is all new to me. Can I really find freelance work on this site and other sites i.e. guru.com or is the competition too large? Just want to know if I am spinnng my wheels. My background has been primarily in healthcare for last few years but open to all topics. Appreciate all words of advice. Thanks.

My advice - don't wait for actual ads
Don't wait for ads to pop up on this or other sites. Contact magazines you might be interested in directly.

I agree with the above poster. Contact desired employment directly, with clips and other examples of your work at hand.

Also, a regular poster on here named Keltoi2 is in your area of expertise. Maybe he could give you some insight, should you stick with your background strengths.

Best of luck to you

Hustle at all times. When not working on an assignment, be surfing the web looking for ideas and possible media outlets, researching who does the assigning and what that person looks for.

Remember that 'Wal-Mart stories'-- cheap, quick gigs that pay a few hundred bucks and will never win a Pulitzer or even be worth remembering next week-- still exist in large volumes. But editors need them so regularly and so quickly, they won't even bother listing them on Media Bistro. It's not worth the cost and time. They just go to writers they know. How do you get them to know you? Research who they are and get in their face.

And ignore listings on Craigs List, they're crap.
