We all have seen dozens of postings from folks asking "should I join Freelance Marketplace?" and the various answers that follow; some say yes, some say no (I'm in that camp) but I have one serious gripe to voice to those who, IMHO, take advantage of those of us who've shelled out the money to join off and on over the years; stop using us as mass marketing lists!

As someone who successfully works both sides of the fence - writing and publicity - it wouldn't dawn on me to use the Freelance Marketplace as a place to send massive PR email blasts, and certainly not of the caliber that I've received lately. It's bad enough that most of them are truly terrible press releases but, worse, they have absolutely no connection to my very specific areas of writing expertise or my editorial outlets. I used to get maybe one or two a week - now it's sometimes a half-dozen a day. I've heard through the grapevine that there's actually an advice column on some PR website that recommends using MB and similar sites to troll for list additions and that that recommendation was also posted on a blog to help authors publicize their books. Now, maybe if the authors/publicists actually READ the specialty area of the writer and was selective but...

Am I the only person annoyed to the max about this kind of stuff?

I agree. Did anyone else receive the survey for freelancers that did not bcc and instead had ALL the email addresses on the 'to' line?

Using the Freelance Marketplace for PR pitches is a violation of our Terms of Service. If anyone sends you any communication about anything other than a paid work opportunity, please forward the message to us and we will contact them. If it's just a misunderstanding, we'll generally let them off with a warning; if it's malicious (or a repeat offense), we'll ban them outright.

maphop, if you ever hear more concrete information about this PR website that's encouraging people to spam our members, please let me know and we'll set them straight.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

Also, Righter, can you tell me a little more about this survey? The way FM is set up, it should be impossible for anyone to send a mass email through our system.

Thanks.
