I have an event and party planning client. She's talented, serious and the anti-thesis of dilettante, plus she does beautiful work.

I want to introduce her to the Chicago Media. Specifically the bridal editors and Core Chicago Pubs that I'd like to begin pitching this summer. I know that editors are overworked and underpaid and attempt to help ease the burden not contribute to it.

I am thinking of a beautifully done, high-quality invitation-type piece with pix of her work, quotes and party/entertaining tips and a hand-written note from me, her publicist. This isn't a mass mailing and I have very specific targets in mind.

My question: Do editors care? I don't want to include a cheap promo item, but since the target is small would include a nice item if it really would catch their eyes.

Would a high-quality wedding-invitation-thing be opened or tossed?

Thanks.

When I worked at a newspaper, that might have caught my eye compared to all the "Dear editor/reporter" pitches that often had the incorrect name on them.

(Also, yay for no little cheap item!)

I'd at least open it and give it a bit of thought, especially if it seemed unique.

A lot of the battle in direct mail is just to get the people to open your pitch.

At the same time, if I were going to go to this trouble, I would want to give them a bigger call to action. It seems like a lot of effort to go to just to say, "Hey, I just wanted to let you know I exist and I'll be tossing some ideas your way in a couple of months."
