Topic: from regional to national

| stories227 | Posted 4/27/2008 4:46:52 PM | show profile I've been a staff writer at a well respected regional publication for a few years, have a couple of national mag freelance clips, and have had a bunch of internships (abroad and here, but none are with national consumer mags). I'm trying to make the jump to NYC. Based on several info interviews and from what I've gleaned on boards like this, it seems like the only option for me is to try to break in on an EA or an entry-level assistant level. But others have said I've got too much reporting/writing experience and that wouldn't make sense. I'm at a loss for whether I should even be looking for paid internships that would allow me to put a consumer mag on my resume, or simply continue to cold-email editors to get on their radars and apply for whatever openings are available. I haven't yet moved to NY. Is all my writing/reporting experience for naught in the eyes of national consumer mags simply because it wasn't for a NY-based, national publication? Looking for any advice, suggestions, and/or wake-up calls. |

"I've been a staff writer at a well respected regional publication for a few years, have a couple of national mag freelance clips, and have had a bunch of internships (abroad and here, but none are with national consumer mags)." There are regional publications and then there are regional publications, same goes for national freelance clips. YOu know from looking at these boards it's a very competitive world out there. The market may be almost as tough as it's ever been, with candidates pouring out from other publications' layoffs. Are the national mag clips in your portfolio strong? If not, might want to strengthen them, and strengthen any existing relationships with editors you've done stuff for. It sounds to me like the national mags have so many applicants that they are able to have their pick in several areas. But hopefully some with national and NYC experience will weigh in here. |
