Hi, Does anyone know how to break into Slate or Salon? I've searched the site map and I don't see any contact information indicating writer's guides for freelancers? Are they as tight-knit a bunch as the mainstream newspapers and mags when it comes to welcoming outsiders and what is the pay like?

Thanks, in advance, to everyone who has some light to shed on this subject.

On Salon, if you click on about us or somthing like that, you'll find the editors listed by section. Know what section your idea goes in and query that editor. Unless it's an essay, I believe they prefer queries. If they want it, they respond pretty quickly. They also pay quickly, like within 2 weeks with no hounding. I don't know about Slate.

I sold a piece to Salon. Pretty easy. Just clicked around the site, found the name of an editor, sent the piece in (an essay) and they bought it. Pay was crap.

other benefits
Yes, the pay sucks but the exposure is huge. I haven't written for Salon recently, but every time I have in the past I've gotten some other gig going as a result -- book offers, other magazine assignments, TV and radio appearances. Like the NYT, this is one instance where the benefits way offset the low pay.

My friend got paid $400. Relatively painless editing process.

That wasn't my experience. I wrote a 1000 word humor essay for them. Got a good number of reader responses, but nothing else came from it.

Not trying to make it worse, but the person I knew got a similar book deal. But her essay was about a specific topic of interest.

i have written for slate several times. they are great to work with.

they accept short pitches. just write up a paragraph or two and send directly to the editor who covers the section. i always hear back immediately.

good luck!
