Greetings. My apologies if this is not the appropriate place to post this.

I'm part of a group of independent artists & designers that reside in the NYC area, and we're looking for someone to write a profile piece about us. How would we go about doing that?

Do we hire a writer and send the piece to the publications on our own, or does the writer do that? Not exactly sure how it works, so any advice/tips would be truly appreciated.

Many thanks!

You should hire a PR person and ask them to send out press releases. Or if you guys know editors/writers at publications, you can "pitch" the idea to them (very brief story idea either over the phone or a paragraph via email) that outlines the story. Bear in mind that stories need to include a question or struggle, something to engage the reader. Not just a "here we are!" kind of thing, unless for the local paper.

Thanks for your input. I wasn't sure exactly how to go about it before, but this definitely helps! Much appreciated!
