Recently I've pitched a few stories to the LA Times and have gotten absolutely nowhere (read: no response at all). I've been published in the paper several times in the past, but wondered if the recent layoffs have anything to do with not being able to get in now? Maybe the ex-staffers are getting all the freelance work (wouldn't blame them, just guessing)? Has anyone who is not a regular contributor already succeeded in selling a story to the LA Times in the last few months?

Thanks,
CK

The health section takes freelancers

Why would you want to? They pay so little. Calendar might take a pitch, but they've really cut their budgets.

Yeah, Calendar has always been half freelance written, but they recently hired a few of their almost-full-time freelancers so that kind of killed a lot of freelance.

Still can get in on Health, especially since they have a personal essay, but Travel is now almost all staff-written (they hired bloggers.)

Anyway, connect with an editor and follow up (through e-mail.) They usually will respond after a few tries.

I recently called the editor of the magazine. She picked up the phone and was personable. I'd never written for them before. We talked about their editorial calender. She seemed open to freelancers.
