Is it a R.N. or an R.N. for registered nurse. Please briefly explain which is correct. Thanks so much in advance.

General rule (as I know it) is that "an" goes before a word starting with a vowel sound and "a" before a word beginning with a consonant sound. I, personally, think an RN is more natural than a RN, even if "a" is technically correct.
