During the second week of June I'll be relocating to Philadelphia, where I'm from. My husband got a new job there. I know it's always tricky job hunting while living so far away, and right now I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.

I've identified a few places that I'm interested in. Do I use my Philly address on my cover letter and resume? (We are in the process of buying a house and close in late May.) I feel like I'll be more seriously considered with a local address.

But, do I pretend I currently live there? I'm called for an interview, I'd need a bit more notice since I'd have to take off work and get on a plane. What if I have to go back for a second interview? That would be quite inconvenient and expensive to go back again.

Or should I use my Philly address and explain that I'll be relocating in June?

What would you do?

Thanks!

I think you should be careful not to give the impression you're a local hire (or trying to hide the fact that you aren't) because local hires are preferred for reason other than being able to come in for interviews on the spot. Local hires are preferred because they already have some grasp of local issues, whereas hires from outside must come in and get up to speed, be debriefed, play catch-up, etc.

What you don't want to do is inadvertently give the impression that you were concealing your location in order to appear to have this local edge. That's not your intention, but you never know what potential employers think of your intention -- and in most cases you will never have the opportunity to find out. If they assume you're trying look like a local hire, then find out you're 600 miles away after deciding to interview you, in most cases you won't even know if they were put off by that discovery. They'll just decide quietly and to themselves not to hire you and come up with some reasons why it wouldn't be worth your while to buy a plane ticket, etc.

In many cases it seems to me that when an employer offers to fly in at their own expense the employer is put off by that because it seems like a desperate measure . It also almost reeks of presumptuousness -- after all most people wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on the off chance they might land a job after a typical job interview.

If I were you I'd simply plan to search for work upon arrival or prepare en exploratory trip to Philly in a way where you do not have to disclose to potential hires that you made the effort specifically for one particular job or interview.

OOPS, I mean: ". . . that when a potential hire offers to fly in at his or her own expense the potential employer is put off by that . . . "

That's not necessarily true. In Philadelphia, as in most major cities, lots of the editorial and marketing jobs don't focus on local issues. She may, for example, be applying to the many national health-industry publications in the area, in which case knowledge of Philadelphia issues is completely irrelevant.

In any case, she won't be able to hide that she's a newcomer to the city, even if she waits until she is physically located there. All her recent job references will be in other cities.

Do not lie.

I am moving and just went on a trip to arrange things.

A week or two before I set up intvus with possible employers and met them while I was in town.

I just told them what my situation was -- moving in July -- and they were all totally fine with it.

I do think if I'd gone earlier though, it might have been kind of pointless.

I do find that in many cases there is indeed a home-team advantage, the strength of this advantage will vary but it's not relegated only to publications focusing on local issues )ie local newspapers). Employers often prefer to hire locally.

In any case, my advice pertains to making decisions based on odds -- and the odds are that if the applicant tries to appear to be a local hire (rather than a relocation hire) the potential employer may presume that the applicant was playing with the concept of the home-team advantage, whether she is or not. And in that case it wouldn't matter if the publication gives preference to local hires or not. It's just playing it safe.

Well, sure there's a lot of value to hiring locally. Interviewing them is easier. There is no issue with them settling in. Etc., etc. But the poster I was disagreeing with suggested that there is a big advangage to someone who had lived in a region a long time, as opposed to someone who had moved to the area two weeks ago.

Put an asterisk next to your current address on your resume, and then at the bottom of the resume, say something like, "Moving to Philadelphia on June XX.) You can mention your moving date in your cover letter. Be specific.

But in all honesty, at this late date, chances are slim you'll have an interview before you move there. Hiring is a slow process these days because it's an employer's market. I moved to NY in September and although I had interviews lined up for three days after I arrived, they were for companies I applied to at the end of July. It takes a lot of employers three to four weeks to sort through resumes and pick a handful of candidates several parties can agree to interviewing.

In your cover letter, tell them what you just said here, that you will be there in two weeks. When I'm looking at resumes, I'm always skeptical when someone is out of the area because for all I know they're applying to jobs all over the county and Boston is at the bottom of their list, so they don't really want to come here and I coudl waste a lot of time with them. (Have been burned several times in these scenarios and now very rarely work with out of area candidates...as it costs me a lot of time and money when they back out of an accepted offer at the last moment because they dont' really want to move.)

However, the exception is when someone tells me up front that they are definitely moving here, and it's just a matter of when. Often they have a good reason, such as family in area or something. In that case, I'll gladly work with them.

So give them that info and you'll be fine.

By already having a house there and relocating by June or sooner (put that in -- you know you could if you had to) you have taken care of one of the biggest obstacles to out-of-town hires. You've taken care of the problem of "Can I get her here when I don't pay relocation and how will I know if she wants to stay if I hire her?"

The next thing that might relieve their minds even more is if you take the delicate matter of how to get you there when they have a good supply of local candidates.

"I will be in Philadelphia to get my house ready for the next few weeks (months, whatever). I'd like to set up a time to discuss this job opportunity. Is there some time in the next month that might be best for you?"

I helped two friends nail out of town jobs with this strategy.

Good luck!
