| hallsylv | Posted 5/3/2008 1:28:15 AM | show profile | email poster Ok so I know that for a TV reporter, nothing beats good professional experience, but for my own reasons, I'm still interested in J-school for my masters. I'm not interested in spending 2 years in a library researching how other people report. If I'm going to grad school, I'm going to do alot of reporting myself, and I'm leaving with lots of clips. I'm looking at Syracuse and Northwestern because these two seem to send their graduates into the profession as opposed to research positions. Does anyone have any comments on these grad programs? Are there any others that are top notch as far as hands-on broadcasting? And how hard is it to get into these programs? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |
| ManhattanMatt | Posted 5/4/2008 2:59:50 PM | show profile First of all ... We in broadcasting don't have "clips". Reporters compile "reels". And I'm curious as to why you want to get a master's degree in journalism for broadcasting. I can tell you that from WITHIN the business (at the network level), a master's degree from j-school is worthless. Unless you want that degree to ultimately TEACH, I'd recommend you get REAL experience. |
| hallsylv | Posted 5/4/2008 10:21:46 PM | show profile Thanks alot for your comment, and especially the vocab. check. I have my own reasons for wanting to go to grad school, and yes I want it to teach me about the business. I'm not interested in getting a degree from a top school, just gaining some skills that I don't currently have, and those two schools seem to do a good job of teaching the skills that I want to acquire. So the question is still out there- Northwestern or Syracuse? Or is there another program I'm not noticing? If there's anyone who can help me with this, I'd be really thankful. |
